You work in IT and need to look professional??

We're happy enough when our IT people keep the hardware and network running... and they shower sometimes too, but it's not a requirement.


I carry a backpack with my laptop in it; and I take it to meetings with the government customer. The laptop has a Hello Kitty skull and crossbones on it as well as an Umbrella logo. I do semiconductor research; they listen to me about device physics and semiconductor processing and stuff.

No - it's for if you think you like to think you look like a government agent - but you actually look like a douche.
 
If you wear a backpack with a suit or a shirt/tie, you look like a tool. (Or you're still in college and going to an interview, which is the only time this is OK). If you don't have to wear a tie to work, then it's probably ok.
