I have never camped out before for anything, so I am wondering when would be a good time to start for PS3. How does closing time on Thursday and 16th sound? too early? Not really sure what 360 was like...

closing time on thurs is too late, imho. not for a console with this much hype and expected shortages

Sounds like there won't be many. I would say as early as they'll let you.

I'm taking my chances online or will wait until they're more plentiful. I'll still have FFXII to play while the PS3 is out.

Depends on where you go. Best Buy seems to be the major magnet for campers followed by Wal-Mart. I'd check out slightly more obscure stores like Costco...

You'll be lucky if that is enough time. I have a hard time believing they will make their production goals...but hopefully Sony can pull it off.

Why?!??! What is so great on ANY console that you're willing to give up more than 24 hours of your life for?

Sony would have to camp out outside my apartment for me to even consider buying their overpriced POS.

i started for the 360 over a day before the launch and still was 8th in line...
most stores in houston area had people in line 2 days before..

I camped out at a Super Wal-Mart starting at about 2:30PM. I was 13th in line (this was one of the few Wal-Marts in my area that was getting an abundant supply of Premiums). I left Super Wal-Mart after midnight and landed at a Sam's Club at around 2AM. I was 5th in line there.

and i assume there is no way to buy online?

if it comes out on friday morning and you really want one you better get there wednesday at closing time. many stores will probably sell them at midnight.

or you could pre-order now and hope that they get enough that your ticket gets punched.

i guarantee you that gamestop will have pre-sold every console they expect to get for the first 4 months.

The EB Games/Gamestop managers I have talked with said they aren't expecting any more than 5-10 PS3s per store.

You could also try places like Meijers.

i camped for the 360. i was planning on going around 6:00 AM when the store opens at 9AM. but around 5pm, the night before, my dad called and said he saw like 10 people outside bestbuy.....so i figured maybe i'd go around 8 or something. then one of my friends called and said there was an assload of people....so i got there at 6pm. i forgot my sweatshirt.....and i was wearing shorts.....i almost died. there was like 60 people in front of me....but people left here and there. finally, in the morning, i got one....but the ****** one without the harddrive.

if i wanted a ps3 bad enough to camp.....i wouldnt. so not worth it. i still regret not selling it on ebay the next day.

Just wait a few months for the price to go down and more games to get released.

It's even better than that with Sam's. Only people with business memberships can get there at 7AM. Everyone else has to wait until their normal business hours. Fortunately, both my wife and I have business memberships. :)

The distribution was screwed up at Wal-Marts too though. Most were getting more cores than premiums (like 2 Premiums and 10 cores). I just lucked out that I decided to stop at that one Wal-Mart on my home and found out that they were getting 23 Premiums and 7 Cores.

Yeah, I would avoid Best Buy like the plague. Talking to a cop while camping outside of Sam's Club, most of the incidences of fights and what not in the Atlanta area happened at Best Buy stores.
