i also camped for the 360. it went down pretty ugly. i got to best buy around 6 and there was 15 people in front of me.
it started to rain steadily around 8 and by that time there were 50 or so people.
things usually get rowdy around 11 when more people show up only to realize they are number 100+ when there are only 75 or less consoles available.
around 1 things quiet down again and people arrange agreements to not skip/allow others in the line so you can go back to your car and sleep.
6am comes around and the noise begins again. things get rowdy at 8 again when others try show up and the line is about 200 or so.
830 manager tells anyone past number 75 or so that you will not get a system and you might as well go home.
best buy opens at 9 and there is a 3 man police escort that lets people in one by one to get one system.

NEVER go to circuit city. i heard people who opened cc cards got in first and they usually grab up the systems.

I was considering going camping out for one, and flipping it on ebay. But I have a feeling that ps3 isnt going to be like the 360 was on ebay. Since the PS3 is already so expensive I have a feeling that most people will probably not bid on it after $800 or so. Which leaves you with like a $100 profit after taxes, paypal and ebay fees.

I just did a quick calculation of the B&M stores in USA that the console will probably be at. These include Sams Club, Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, EB games, and Game Stop. The rough total I came up with is around 15,000 B&M locations. Sony announced that there will be 600,000 consoles available for North America launch. Best case scenario, meaning EXCLUDING all internet sales and designating all 600k PS3's to B&M USA locations, there would be roughly 40 consoles per store. I think it would be safe to cut that number in half because of online and Canada B&M stores. I'm guessing 20 consoles per B&M store? Less?

I would start just as soon as they announce that they are giving them away for free.

not likely.. as the store managers were keeping VERY tight tabs on numbers and inventories.

They dont even let thier own employees buy or reserve on the day they are selling..
there are people in line at the store i camped in that took days off from thier store to be first in line.

I thought sony most recently said it'd be more like 300-400,000 before years end in NA?

Only number I remembered was 600k, but in that case, cut 20 in half. 10 consoles per B&M location? Have fun camping guys. :)

EDIT: Whoops, and you said before years end, so could we seriously be seeing as few as 150,000 on launch day?

depends, usually best buy allows 10 systems to be sold to random employees through a raffle system. the chances of you paying off the right employee is low. this process of 10 systems to be sold to employees is also dependent on your best buy/retailer policy. naturally if they sold all their systems to employees, ms/sony would probably punish the retailer by not allowing them to sell future games and consoles through that retailer.

400k for NA.
So, I'd say 250k over 15,000 stores. Somewhere around 15-17 per store. I don't know if Sony is going to ship to mom & pop and other big chains in the launch day madness. I bet smaller markets get the shaft for a while too. I'd say a reasonable estimate is less than a dozen per store on average across the US.

Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the launch were pushed back again.

last year the 360 launched with only 400,000 consoles in the US.
stores like best buy and circuit usually get a higher allocation of units.
this is due to contract agreements since stores like best buy and cc sell more games

You should revise your figures. Only 400,000 consoles for North America.

Last thing I remember hearing was 500,000 units at launch with 400,000 of those being US, and 100,000 being Japan. Or at least I believe that was the correct number

That is correct and assuming that Sony can even meet those numbers....

I am almost positive that the 400k figure is not for launch, but till years end.

Apparently the blue laser diode shortage that has delayed the PAL launch of the PS3 will also be affecting the North American and Japanese launches of the console. Sony Computer Entertainment Chief Ken Kutaragi told reporters that far fewer units will be available for the U.S. and Japanese launches, with the U.S. to be allocated 400,000 units, and Japan getting 100,000. As a result, Sony has now lowered its estimate of 4 million PS3s shipped by the end of 2006 to a more realistic 2 million.

Kaz mentioned this exact estimate reduction a couple of weeks ago in a Gamespot intervew (which was quickly retracted), so it appears as if the company has known about the production issues for a while. Thanks to these production issues, trying to bag a PS3 at the suggested retail price before Christmas is going to be game in and of itself.

Yep, I just looked it up myself, I stand corrected. But it's going to be pretty much impossible to get one without camping out for days.

I'm probably just going to show up the day before for the wii.

dont know if anyone said it....but even if u have a business or w/e membership at costco or sam's club....they wont let you in....at least to buy the system. everyone thought they outsmarted the "system" by using there business membership to get in early and pick one up.....no one got in....anywhere.

Maybe its time to start thinking about replacing my dreamcast with an Xbox.
