I know we have some campers, hikers and hunters here. What do you typically carry in your pack when your out in the sticks? I was doing a little inventory today of my camping gear. It seems every time I go out I end up with another piece of gear to drag along. I do travel as light as possible though. So what's in your pack?

Tent/sleeping bag
firestarters, matches, lighter
rope/twine
kabar knife/pistol with two full magazines, letherman tool
small cookset, some dehydrated food
canteen and small vial of bleach
flask of broubon
Depending on area maybe a folding ax or saw.
Cloth/rag/soap
compass and map
Sometimes will bring fishing line and hooks to fish with with artificial bait. Adds almost no weight and handy to have. Wouldn't mind one of those tiny pocket fishing poles.

-edit-
Forgot the important parts - clean dry socks and a small first aid kit (enough to stich yourself if needed or take care of a good sized gash or wound).
Oh - and some pocket binoculars.

You take a brick oven camping?
Are you the chuck wagon?

I live and hike in AZ so first and foremost is WATER.
A camelback and a another water bottle too. If I'm going for more than a day I bring either my water treatment (tiny little bottle of iodine tablets) or my water filter.

Other than that...

Tent
Sleeping bag
First aid kit and stuff to repair gear (small duct tape, zip ties, etc)
Extra socks, usually no other clothes unless I toss in a set of shorts to wear at a swimming hole
Tiny shammy to use as a camp towel
One pot to boil water in for freeze dried food
Aforementioned freeze dried food.
Small camp stove
small headlamp
matches
bug spray and sunscreen
a few ibuprofen, pepto bismol, and other pills

I usually cook for 12 to 30 people.

What do you guys think of taking beef jerky into bear country. Is it any better/worse than taking other forms of food? I am thinking it would be easier to have beef jerky as the majority of my food for weekend trips.

No more dangerous than any other food but, boring! Truly, variety is a huge boost for camping/hiking trips.
