It would severly cut down on street crime if the US government put cameras on every street block in America.

Is this a good idea? Bad idea?

True, but it would severly decrease muggings, robberies, rapes, hookers, etc...

I'll take the muggins/robberies, etc to not live with cameras everywhere.

as technology becomes cheaper and more capable it's going to be increasingly difficult not to be tracked/filmed in public. It shouldn't worry people as much as it does - afterall, it's called PUBLIC for a reason.

I personally couldn't care less if somebody has me on film with my finger up my nose or scratching my ass.

cameras on every street corner are not the answer to crime.

they have cameras in stores, quicki marts, etc...violent crimes still occur.

So I would prefer my liberties to not be compromised because of criminals. Crime will always occur.

I think it's a good idea. It'll keep crime down and it'll help solve a lot of crimes where without camera it may have gone unsolved for years.
I'm willing to give up some freedom for everyone's safety. It'll be selfish I think for people to say that the government is watching us all the time so therefore we shouldn't have any cameras.

edit: I don't understand how it encroaches upon your liberty? I mean you're still able to do what you're going to do unless that's going in to rob a bank or commit some kind of crime? Why are people so afraid? Help me understand.

Facial recognition occuring when you don't even know it (like in minority report), DNA database of everybody...things like that can definitely curb crime, and they will when it kicks in. People have no problem with crims getting their fingerprints taken now, so it won't be long before somebody has to get their DNA taken too. People will gravitate towards it when they see the benefits that technology can offer. A prime example is the new airport security setup

I do have a problem with getting my fingerprints taken and would have an even bigger problem getting DNA taken as well. That's just wrong.

Our freedoms are being slowly eroded away. I'll fight anything that continues that trend. I will not allow the actions of a few dictate the desires of the many.

Cameras wouldn't stop the crime...

The crime could be detered.

Would you rather have:

1) Your mom is getting raped, the camers quickly pick it up and notify the police. The police go to the scene and arrest the criminals or they know who they are because the cameras picked up their faces.

2) Your mom gets raped and no one is around. Because there are no cameras the thugs take their time and slice your mom's throat. Your mom dies and the police have no leads because no one saw what happened.

Hmm.. I'll take scenerio 1.
