slippery slope man...

I can see it now...cameras hovering around issuing tickets for swearing and <gasp> smoking or maybe making a frowny face.

So if your mother got jumped and gang raped by a bunch of thugs this would be fine?
cameras on every street corner are not the answer to crime.

they have cameras in stores, quicki marts, etc...violent crimes still occur.

So I would prefer my liberties to not be compromised because of criminals. Crime will always occur.
Facial recognition occuring when you don't even know it (like in minority report), DNA database of everybody...things like that can definitely curb crime, and they will when it kicks in. People have no problem with crims getting their fingerprints taken now, so it won't be long before somebody has to get their DNA taken too. People will gravitate towards it when they see the benefits that technology can offer. A prime example is the new airport security setup

here

excellent link.

notice that people have a choice in that article.
That's the key thing about it - people have the choice, and a lot of them are doing it. If I flew all the time I'd do it in a heartbeat too.
Our freedoms are being slowly eroded away. I'll fight anything that continues that trend. I will not allow the actions of a few dictate the desires of the many.
But there is nothing particularly unfree about having my DNA stored in some database. It's stored all over my house anyway :) Most people agree that criminals should have their prints taken, so that they can be cross-referenced with other crimes. People see DNA as something more personal, but the big DNA database will come, in time.

I can see it now... potential criminals being deterred. I guess it's not important until you or someone you are close to are the ones being attacked...

Yep, that would happen for sure, in time. You'd have to blunt some of the laws, knowing that enforcement is so much easier. Otherwise everybody would go around like a zombie out in public trying to avoid a citation for crossing the street, dropping a wrapper by mistake, or blowing a snot on the ground.

see the demolition man references I'm trying to make.

damn seashells.

To approach the original post...I fail to see how it would severely decrease crime.

Think like a criminal - you think they care if they get caught? Even the death penalty isn't much of a deterant. Nor life in prison. There is still crime.

Well, there are a lot of unsolved crimes...this would aid in solving a lot of them. Also, if the cameras could eventually be smart enough to identify likely violence, they could alert an operator who could zoom in and call the cops - you'd never need to!

I don't know, I have mixed feelings about it, We have a zillion security cameras @ work & crooks still got away with thousands of dollars of LCD's right after they were installed.

My friends that work in the monitor room says management is down there a lot spying on employees.

Crooks just figure a way around the cameras if they're good crooks.

Yet your only real argument against it is because you don't want to be caught spitting on the street or the like. Sounds kinda selfish...

True, but it would severly decrease muggings, robberies, rapes, hookers, etc...

freedom, personal privacy, citizen's rights . . . .

On public streets? Trust me...the government doesn't even agree that you OWN your home right now. You're just renting it from them.

I'm surprised some fool hasn't yet said: "If you're not guilty, what are you worried about?"

BTW, you can lead sheep over a cliff b/c THEY ARE STUPID!
