Calling in sick when you are not sick....

I seriously am tempted to do this because I'm so tired and I used up about 3 weeks of vacation because of family illness this year. I've only done it twice in my entire life (I did it on my very first job -- it was a very boring government job and I had a 3+ hour commute) but I have not done it since. I've been working almost 7+1/2 years in my current job.

So, I want to know how common is this? How many of you have ever called in sick but was not really sick? For me, the hard part is to call in and pretend I'm sick and lie. Am I supposed to make a sick voice? What if I over do the "sick voice" and then they'll know I'm just faking it?

Oh well, I'll probably end up just toughing it out for the rest of the year and be honest.... but I'm so tired.......

Just call and speak quietly. Stomach virus or food poisoning works well.

Hey boss this is StormRider. I feel really tired and do not feel like I would be productive at work. I would like to take today off so I can be fully rested and ready to go the next day. Is that alright?

You don't have to lie.

I'm really sick (cover mouthpiece and mumble "of work") and won't make it in today.

Honest truth and you're not lying.

The rule on this is:

If you call in sick they may question it. Some employers know *nudge nudge wink wink* that you need a personal day and don't mind too much.

If you have a tightass boss, however, use "the appearance". Basically, don't shower and try and keep your face pasty white in the morning. Don't comb your hair. Just dress and go to work. You will give the appearance you don't look well. After about 15 mins tell them you gotta go home because you are going to puke any moment.

Works like a charm and no one questions it ;):D:p (If you were faking it, you wouldn't have made the effort to come in to work so it goes. It sounds counter intuitive but it works well.)

Lots of skin lotion works.

Easiest thing to do is either tell them straight or tell them that you think you ate something bad because you're going to the shitter every 10 minutes. No need for fake voices or pretending to be sick in either case ;)

In an off the record chat with human resources, they told me that the best way to take an uncontested sick day off is to mention a STD flareup.

Your idea is sound in theory, except what you're describing sounds more like being hung over than sick. Tightass boss isn't going to be too sympathetic if he thinks you're calling out due to being out all night tearing things up.

Do companies really still have you call into a person to call out sick these days? My past two jobs at corporate offices have had an automated call in thing, you put in your employee ID and it forwards your info to the scheduling department to let them know you won't be in. Makes it a lot easier to call out "sick" Little TOO easy, actually. :)

the key is word gets around and then you have no chance of hitting anything...

for all intents in purposes, you are inviting the office to become a veritable circus where all the games are rigged and the only ones that will talk to you have beard and only take quarters....

If stormrider is as candid with his co-workers as he is on ATOT, no one will buy that line :p

I can't believe no one has said this. You call in early before anyone is at work. Leave a voicemail with your secretary. How hard is this?

Whenever you call in sick people already assume that you're not really sick. Trying to fake a sick act is only going to make you look bad.

Remember the golden rule: K.I.S.S (Keep It Simple Stupid). Don't elaborate, don't go into a lenghty story, don't pretend to cough, etc. Just say, "Hey, ________, it's me. I won't be able to make it in today. I'm really not feeling that great. Sorry for the short notice."

Done. Period. If they ask you what's wrong, just simply state again, "I'm just not felling well at all." Simple, but effective. ;)

That's why you always prepare a carton of emergency spoiled milk in your fridge .
