At one particular place of employment I had 3 months worth of paid sick days within a 12 month period. 7 days of that I was really sick. Often took time off days up to a week at a time. What can I say, I'm a good story teller ;)

At my company they don't even both with specific "sick days" anymore... we just have 'vacation' time and then 'personal days'. If you get sick and you're out of personal days you have to burn vacation time.

Trying to lie will just make you look bad. Tell your boss you feel like crap and you won't be productive so you're taking a sick day. If it's chronic, maybe you should ask to have your workload/hours temporarily scaled back a bit due to all the family issues (though I don't know how feasible that is for your job).

This is why I am in favor of ditching the vacation time, sick time, floating holiday, personal day, etc and just dumping it all into one large pot called PTO. My feelings are you worked the necessary hours to earn those balances so you should be able to do anything with them.

This year my company went to a general leave system instead of separate vacation/sick leave.

Previously we had a set vacation accrual for the year and no set sick leave. Basically if your manager approved it, you were paid. No limit. I guess people abused it.

Since we now accrue sick/vacation into a general leave, I dont have to give reasons when I call. I just say I won't be in.

Hello Mr. Weed, I was in a horrible plane crash, my whole family is dead, and I am a vegetable. I'll be in tomorrow.

Be honest. Tell your boss what the problem is, and ask if you can take tomorrow off, and work Saturday to make up the time.

"mental health day"

Don't even try to make a voice, it's so obvious when you do that.

Tell them you got it coming out both ends, and if they'd like you can bring a sample for verification.

I'm considering this next Friday for a LAN party. I'll just stick to sending an email stating that I'm not feeling well and won't be in.

I almost never take a sick day (I rarely get sick). When I do, I just e-mail my boss and say "I'm taking a sick day." He doesn't ask questions, and he doesn't care why I take the day off.

I used to do this a lot when I was younger. Now that I'm married, have kids, and a mortgage I don't do it anymore and I really like my job.

I've done it a few times but mainly when a new movie came out or a new game (Diablo 2 comes to mind). Just talk slowly and as if you are in pain and about to puke. Nothing they can do about it if you are granted sick leave as part of your job terms.

That's what I've said. And I've also called early before work and just left a message.

Jesus... how do some of you retain a job.
You just call in and say "I'm not feeling well today... I don't think its best if I come in."
simple as that. Don't fake anything. Don't make anything up.

its BEYOND noticeable when you call in to your boss (ie: me) using a "sick voice" It's simply obvious when you do it. You're not pulling the wool over anyone's eyes.

We have built in "sick days" but I'm never ill. I still want my days off.

Yeah, a BB message in the morning or something. If I am just tired, I'd just work from home unless I'm really sick. Just get up when you are supposed to be in and vpn in. A couple of hours of extra sleep should help you feel better.

I actually do this...but i only do this when i am actually sick....

I email when Im sick also. There was one day last year where I called out of work because i just needed a day; I was burnt out with work and school finals. I emailed my boss this and she understood.
