Actually, wouldn't it go straight to the blood stream?

I don't believe the liver works coming from the back door.

So make sure a use small small SMALL doses

These medicines have directions for a reason. Follow them and don't use them in an alternate intake fashion.

Why not call her doctor? She can have the after-hours service page the doctor so that he/she can call her.

He's not talking about shoving an asprin pill up her ass, he very clearly asked if getting suppositories was a valid alternative -as in, will the drug being absorbed help her because she can't keep medicine down via the stomach. Nobody said anything about shoving pills up her ass.

Sorry, I misread the thread and combined some of the other responses with what the OP was asking, leading to my response. The last part of my response still stands.

The liver filters the blood...

How did you think the liver works? As a extension of the stomach/GI tract?

The liver filters the blood, but it looks like Gothgar thinks that the GI tract provides a direct injection into the blood, when in fact, it does not. Blood that absorbs stuff from the GI tract goes straight to the liver through the portal vein.

Direct injection into a vein would take longer to get filtered by the liver than consumption orally or rectally.

There are lots of medicines given through this route. When a baby has seizures we give medicines via 'da butt if nothing else is available.

Just remember to keep the cheeks pinched together after administration. 😉

EDIT: But I have no idea about tylenol, use a good source for info. (Call the ER, they love these types of things.)

bahaha, I didn't expect this thread would survive this long

But no pics, she gets mad when I do that and my shenanigans have irritated her enough for one day.

I think I'll show her this thread tomorrow, if we're lucky she'll sign up and we'll have a new "Hi I'm new and female" thread to nef in. Is that an acceptable substitute?

As long as the suppository remains in the distal 2/3rds of the rectum, it will avoid first pass metabolism at the liver, because the veins draining the distal 2/3rds do not feed into portal circulation (thus draining into the liver). They feed into the internal iliac distribution ->inferior vena cava->heart.
