here is the deal, my campus network sucks bad. there are WAAAAAAYYY to many people for the network. right now my connection is about equal to a 14.4 modem.... i'm not exaggerating at all. most files i even have trouble downloading. everything speeds up around 1-3 am, and then it is fine until about 9-10am. but hell, im sleeping at those times, like everyone else.

now my question to you guys is, is there a way i can prioritize myself higher than anyone else on the network?

i called the tech support people and they said that if there were 4 people downloading at full capacity that it would fill up the system to the max. there are about 2,000 people on the network, and it was designed for about 500.

so again, im running win 98 SE, is there anything i can do to my system to better my bandwith to beat the system?

thanks in advance guys.

There isn't much that you can do with your system to prioritize you on the network. Basically you'll have to deal with it.

Bribe the admin. Kill the other students, or clip their wires.

Nothing you can do, and this is about the 400th post about college dorm networks sucking.

You can't do this with a change to your pc, but if you can find an admin of the router that serves your subnet, they can set up a priority-list that will give you higher priority based on your IP address, only if you're static, not natting. I've done this at my last company I worked for, but it was a small company. Don't bank on getting this done where you are. It won't happen.

Call the cable company and get cable modem service. Then "resell" your bandwidth via a router.
