my opinion -
dont limit yourself to glock.
i'm partial to the .40 s&w round.
go to a range and try the hk usp40, the sig p229 and some of what ever else they have to try.
if you are partial to striker type actions, try the walther p99

good luck

Desert Eagle is junk, it's a showpiece, not a shooter. I think you can do MUCH better than a Glock, especially if money is no object. Go for whatever model fits your hand best in either .40S&W or .45, 9mm is a womens gun.

I don't have my 9mm anymore, but I wouldn't encourage you to step in front of the 9mm Hydrashock I carried while on duty.

I wouldn't encourage you to step in front of a .22, a high-powered pellet gun or even a well thrown dart. That doesn't change the fact that the 9mm is badly underpowered compared to a .45 or .40 S&W

It's still gonna kill you.

Between the two, Glock, because shooting a .50 gets old and exhausting pretty fast, not to mention expensive. I'd opt for the full-size one(G17 for 9mm, G22 for .40). But if I had other choices, I would probably opt for a Springfield XD with a 5" barrel. Or a Sig, or a HK, or a CZ, or.... I'm not a fan of Glock's trigger and the grip angle, but this stuff is usually YMMV between each shooter.

Agreed.
DE's look great in movies and videos, but are frickin practically useless for Home defence.
If you're serious about HD , then a shotgun is your weapon of choice. imo.

100% agreed. The Glock 22 is the best full size pistol I've ever owned, hands down.

I have shot a lot of different handguns and if I were told that I was going to be deserted on an island and had to pick one handgun...it would most certainly be my Glock.

I love my stainless Sig P220, but it is not nearly as practical. My only other suggestion would be the H&K USP 45 cal. I really like that gun. My friend owns one and it will likely be my next purchase.

Anyway, as bradruth stated, the Glock 22 is an ideal all around sidearm.

"Deagles" are only popular because of Counter Strike, and they have no real world practicality.

Go get a Kimber .45 TLE II which is basically the same gun carried by LAPD SWAT. Very nice custom .45 and very reliable.

Most 9mm rounds won't penetrate a car door... if you have to put your life on the line, carry a weapon with some power, like the .45.

*edit*
If you're looking primarily for home defense, get a Ruger or S&W .44 magnum revolver. Load it up with Cheney-style bird shot rounds, and you have a legal short-barreled 6 shot shotgun.

*sigh*

If this is your first handgun and you must have tupperware, I think you should get a Glock 17 or 19 - 9mm. The reason is that you can get high quality 9mm ammo for very cheap - usually half the cost of lousy .45 and 50% less than so-so .40. Yes, it's a small caliber - and that may be an issue for people who have nothing else to base their masculinity on - but I can promise you nobody will laugh when you point your Glock 17 at them.

Here's why ammo cost is so important: you're going to have to spend a LOT of time at the range before you can reliably hit anything with a pistol. It's easy to burn through 150-200 rounds in a single range trip. If 9mm is 10 cents a round and .45 is double that, you can see how expensive this can get. I know you say money is no object but if you're dropping $40+ every time you go shooting, you're not gonna want to do it very often, and you won't develop the skills you need to defend yourself effectively and safely. And I assure you that a 9mm round at center mass will take your attacker down a whole lot quicker than seven .45 rounds in the wall two feet to your attacker's left.

Of course if you're prepared to spend the extra money, sure, get the higher caliber. There are no drawbacks to that other than cost. But it's much more important to learn to shoot safely and well.

Out of those two, I definately recommend the G22. I have had one for ~10 years. I also have a G27 (sub-compact .40). I would also like to get a G23 (mid sized .40).

Go rent one out at a range if you have the chance. It is one of the most reliable firearms in the world.

I've wanted a Glock 20-c in 10 mm . The -c means its compensated or the barrel/slide has slits cut in the top to allow gas to vent out keeping recoil to a min and the gun on target. That model in .45 would be neat also.

wtf would you want to penetrate a car door? its for home defense, not drive-bys.
i don't know why everyone says you need a large caliber gun for. i've said several times that most criminals will run away just at the sight of a gun. only in extremely rare cases will you run into someone who will keep coming at you after you've shot them a few times.

for target shooting and hd a 9mm would probably be the best compromise, as 9mm ammo is less expensive than .45 and still has enough power. if its good enough for the military, its good enough for anyone else.

just wanted to throw one other thing out (even though it might be a moot point since you said money is no object)...

if you do plan on going to the range alot, you might want to consider the cost of ammo (assuming you don't plan to make your own)...

9mm is pretty darn cheap (a box of 50 rounds is $3.86 for CCI Blazer at Academy) while the .40 is around $7-8...

for home defense, just use some JHP (hollow points) rounds...If you hit your target w/ one of those, I don't he will be walking too far afterwards...i am assuming that most people state that a 9mm is underpowered is when FMJ rounds are used, so please correct me if I am wrong on that....🙂

just something to think about...

Shouldn't you practice with the actual gun(barrel)/ammo you plan on using? Especially if it's for home defense...?

Yes, you should. I suggested the conversion kit because plinking with .45 rounds could become expensive. You could take it out and practice for a while with the .45 and then switch over to the .22 LR and let loose.

Fun to shoot at the range, but a TERRIBLE idea for a defensive weapon. The porting causes a surround flash which can screw up your vision in dark shooting, which is what most home defensive shoots would be.

Barret m85

East Germans made a better one.

Barreta's are just so well balenced.

Umm... he's talking about a Barrett .50 Sniper rifle, not a Baretta pistol.

It would make a terrible home defense weapon.... unless you lived in Wyoming (having nothing better to do and could see your attackers approaching for miles).

for weekend shooting isn't a rifle a little more interesting? Better accuracy and longer range, guess it's personal preference though.
