call this weird, but I don't get the white iPhone

Does the white iPhone have any different functionality than the Verizon, AT&T models?

If not, then what is the point, apart from a new and different colour? :\ Jobs obviously knows that it will sell, it's Apple, right? But it seems to me dishonest to release a device of minimal improved functionality, which as it's Apple will sell highly.

Call this weird again, but I don't get the point of aesthetics in a computer. Computers exist to process information, not to look pretty. IMO, it's like similar to choosing a car solely on how it looks.

It's fine spending a bit more on something you like the look of better. Buying a whole new copy of pretty much the same phone you own for a color swap is pretty stupid in my opinion.

I don't get the complaints. Why complain? It's not like you'll ever buy the device.

And it's not even like there is any price difference from the black version, so of course it's the same as the black version in every way except for the color.

That's like asking why there are so many GeForce GTX 580 when there is already one from EVGA. I mean... if Inno3D decides to release the GTX 580 at the same price point as the one from EVGA some 12 months later, then would you complain about it?

How is this dishonest? Did they advertise that it would have something that it doesn't? Did I miss something?

How is this dishonest? Apple said its the same phone in white. People who buy it knows this. I don't understand the complaints.

Rebooted versions of Android phones using the single core 1ghz snapdragon seems more dishonest to me compared to this.

Theres a white evo too, lots of phones come in two colors.

What I don't get is why it took so long to make white ones, they were announced right from the start

This way they could get even more people to buy two of the same iPhone, and then they'll release the next iPhone shortly after getting people to buy three iPhones in quick succession... It's the kind of marketing only Apple can really get away with.

so that is hundreds of dollars purchase for the same phone in a different colour. I don't think companies should expect consumers to fork out for something that essentially is the same as a previous model.

But it's the same hundreds of dollars you'd pay for the previous model.

Are you thinking it's more expensive or something?

You have to remember that the iPhone, far beyond any other cellular phone, is also a "fashion" item. People buy different colored cases, why not just give them a different colored phone?

What really kills me is that most iPhone owners immediately put a case on their iPhone 😀

I do think aesthetics has a place in the computer industry, as long as it doesn't affect functionality.

Apple actually does a pretty good job of combining the two. All you have to do is notice how well their devices sell and how widely their form factor is copied.

I "get" the new white iPhone 4 release. Its a way to dump iPhone 4s to the only market segment that doesn't care that in a few months it will be technically obsolete!

How so? Rooted phones are sold by individuals, with no warranty or support. The person buying them should know what they're getting into. Its not like they are hiding specs of the device.

I think he meant a rehash of the same phone using old technology with minor tweaks. Not selling a rooted phone on the secondary market.

right?

To the OP: Hundreds of companies do this all the time in different industries, whether it is cars, computers, cell phones, or even professional team/player jerseys. Why does it make apple dishonest when they do it?

since I immediately place any phone I own into a case or holster I don't care really what color they come in.

As opposed to other companies who release "limited" edition colors and models, which aren't any different than the regular one. But in those instances since they're "limited" they generally cost more. Where Apple charges no more, and since it's not "limited" the price won't shoot up for no reason.

Most may have already bought the 2010 initial iPhone 4, and just want the new one since it's white. This seems dishonest IMO.

So people who want to buy a new phone based on color when its totally in their control makes Apple dishonest? I fail to see how thats the case.

right?

Yeah thats what I meant.

True. But at least there's some variation between all Samsung's Galaxy S and Hummingbird based products, and even with HTC's Snapdragon devices.

In the case of the iPhone 4, the only thing different is the color of the back plate. I'm assuming it'll ship with the latest version of iOS too. There's nothing wrong with offering other colors, its just pathetic that it took Apple a year to sell a white iPhone. And not long before they replace it with the latest and greatest. This just screams of a way to dump inventory. And honestly, there should be a price cut to the iPhone 4 models the same day as the iP5 launch.
