MP - Only played on LAN so far with 5-6 players on free for all. This is a perfect pace for me. I agree that the guns are overly accurate using the sights. The low recoil also makes it super easy to get kills. It pretty much comes down to who sees who first and who can get get their sights up faster.

That's how I like it - it brings the game down to skill. Although spraying and praying with anything but a machine gun won't get you far. And even then you're gonna die quick.

sorry to bump this, but i finally started playing COD4 single player and seriously, WTF.

the whole thing is so cartoony and arcadey i'm in disbelief at the acclaim this game has gotten. it feels like a guided light gun game. the graphics aren't even good, very flat and fake looking even with everything maxed and 4xAA. it barely looks better than COD2. the action, if you can call it that, is so frenetic and unrealistic. everything about it, from the weapons to the sounds to the flow of the action is just subpar. all my guns feel like they're shooting BB's and yet enemies die with one hit with such dramatic animations. and the scenarios are so rushed and bs'd that it feels like you're just along for the ride, instead of participating in the mission. it's like they try to make it "Intense" by throwing everything at you, but the whole package just feels ridiculous.

and all the inbetween game stuff like the briefings have such an "EA" feel to them it is sickening. it's stylized jump cuts and graphics and x-ray vision bullshit with thundering music to boot. the game just feels so soulless and inept. ugh, i'm seriously disgusted.

i'll finish it as i heard it's only 5 hrs long but i don't understand how anyone enjoyed this. i've played pretty much every FPS since Wolf 3D and this is probably the most disappointing experience i've had, especially given the COD brand. COD1 and UO were epic and COD2 was pretty good too. but this like the same thing but worse in every possible way except graphics.

i'll stop now :/

I totally dug the Sp mode. I wasn't too fond of Mp though. the overall feel of the game in mp was out of sorts for me. I guess i'm still looking for the next CS.

Ok, I had heard a ton about CoD 4, and had never really read a negative review of it. It looked like the next step in evolution from BF 2 in a way. I bought it for the online play since that's what I look for...

So I start up and I think 'wow...the graphics are gorgeous....I love that the buildings can be shot through, and debris pile-up, cars exploding, all of it' and then every thought about the game since then has been negative. Where do I start??

1. 3/4 of the time you die, it's from grenades. Most online matches are just grenade chucking fests. Most of the time the person that kills you is behind a building or two down the street, and just blindly chucking grenades at you. I usually do decent in any FPS with a kill:death ratio around 1.3:1, which is fine for me. In this game I couldn't get better than 1:3, and it wasn't like I was dying in shootouts, which would actually be fun. Most lives, I would spawn, take two or three steps, and be dead from the grenades. I know you can lob them back at enemies....but that doesn't always work, and when they're cosntantly landing around you, you're gonna die sooner rather than later. And again, this was AWAY from the main action, these are grenades from people a couple buildings away just blindly chucking them like monkeys flinging their own feces.

2. The aimbotting/hacking is RAMPANT. I thought people were just bitching at first, but then I saw it for myself, it is AWFUL. Even servers that are good about kicking cheaters, it takes a few games to catch them, and they dominate for those few games...then they get kicked...then the next wave of people dominate until they get kicked for aimbotting or whatever. It's honestly worse than Diablo I was.

3. I don't know if it's the hit detection or what, but it feels LESS realistic than BF 2 (and I NEVER EVER EVER thought I'd be saying that). I can shoot someone in the face with 1/2 a clip....yet I get shot with a pistol in the knee and I die??? Riiiiight.

4. Snipers EVERYFUCKINGWHERE. Seriously, you step outside of a building on the edge of a map 2 blocks from any enemies....and somehow you get mowed down from 4 different angles by a snipers who're so badass they're probably banging every girl you love, or ever will love, all while murdering you.

I played for a couple weeks and I have to say it is the most frustrating disappointing gaming experience I have ever had. I wouldn't mind having a shitty kill:death ratio if I was actually getting in wicked fun fire-fights with other players....but it's all sniping, grenades, and cheap b.s. kills. Even most of the kills that I got were mostly B.S. I won't lie. The only fun I had was when me and several other players in a game decided to use only our knives. I ended up being at a 1:1 kill:death ratio that game, and it was the only time I ever did. Too bad, what a waste of a game.

I just played singleplayer, and i loved it.

You can blame Epic Games for that. If Unreal Tournament III had been a real Unreal Tournament (1999)-2 that was properly designed for PCs and not at all consolized we'd all be playing that right now.

Really? Maybe you just suck? 1.3:1 KD ratio is not good at all. That's about average...

I used to play on some iffy servers(legalities) where you'd expect the most hackers... we had like... one every few days at most. It was very obvious when they were hacking too. We would ban them. Anyway, the most annoying part of the game on these 24 man servers was the noob tubing. That's it, grenades everyone would deal with but with noob tube it was just instant kill.

Most of the servers I play on are pretty heavily moderated and have a lot of people, so someone cheating stands out quick. It's always flattering to be called a cheater when you're not, though. I've been accused of wall-hacking more than once; I always say 'thank you.' But yeah, 1.3:1 isn't a super-good ratio. On a good day, I can get 3:1, occasionally 4:1. Usually I just maintain 2:1 up through 60 kills:30 deaths, though.

My sentiments exactly. CoD was great, and CoD:UO might have been the best expansion pack I've ever bought. Since then, not so much.

Oddly enough, I agree with the OP.

Single player was OK, but that was it for me.

The SP was short and sweet, MP got old real quick for me because of the run n gun and grenade spamming. I tried to like it but gave up after a week.

Pretty much my feelings as well. I really enjoyed the SP. I will agree with one of the comments about "hide and heal" making it require less tactics but I did my best not to get shot at all.

I really only tried MP once and it just didn't feel right.

I agree with you. I played this for the first time last month and it is like playing an arcade shooter. The enemy is just throwing wave after wave of bodies for you to mow down, and there's little to no strategy involved. Even on the missions that are less combat-oriented, there's always a part where you have to mow down 200 guys and 'GET TO THE CHOPPA'

CoD4 was never meant to be a serious tactical game. The perks etc give it a more arcadey feel. If you play it keeping that in mind, the game is quite good. That being said, there are some major annoyances that will kill even the most experienced players. No it's not the best, but the unlockable system does keep it interesting for a while. Also, S&D is an awesome gametype, especially since it's NOT capture the flag which has been done to death. (And already peaked in Quake/UT ;) )

you can play SP without the HUD - basically, you can play without anything - HUD, subtitles, gun, etc. that's how I, and others, make COD4 movies where the screen isn't cluttered by everything.

also, i believe that the max number of players on team deathmatch is 7v7?

if you play something like groundwars where it's like 10v10, there are a lot of grenades flying around (even on xbox live)

COD4 is MUCH, MUCH better on the 360 than on the PC
end of story

I love how the 360 fan boys linger in the PC games forums ready to pounce on PC gaming threads. There is zero need to drop into a PC thread and say the 360 is better when us PC gamers know the truth. Your not fooling anyone. Microsoft doesn't need your help recruiting more 360 owners, OK. Thanks

I'm not a huge fan of COD4 multi because it is to hectic. I miss the BF1942 days. No logging in online, maps loaded pretty quick unlike BF2 and the game play was close to perfect IMHO considering I played it for 2 years :). Hectic doesn't = exciting to me. Just like when I tried a racing game demo on my PS3. The car was absolutely flying at supersonic speeds. I was thinking this is crap. I don't want to play a racing game like that.

It seems like to many games are going for the hectic/fast gameplay instead of the slower styles which give you some time to think. We recently enjoyed the hell out of Swat 4 + expansion at a LAN party recently. Slow but intense.

I have only read the 1st page of this long thread. But let me say i think COD4 is great. Both single player and multiplayer..

This is the first game i played the multiplayer portion for more than a month. I loved how u can gain XP and unlock new perks/guns. Its highly addictive.

Now as per the OP's negative.

Yes there are lots of grenades on certain maps and certain servers. But try and find servers with pros who don't use noob tubes and grenades often. I rarely use grenades. And I find it hard to believe are dying on everymap b/c of grenades. Certain maps are so large that its very easy to avoid the nades.

As far as dying from snipers. I die by a true sniper maybe once every hour of gameplay. It depends on your defination of a sniper. there are players which outfit there rifles with acog, like me. I am very good at running and gunning, all the while looking down a swaying acog sight.

I died alot in the begining, but give it time and hang in there. You will get better.

BF2 was a complete borefest. I got bored within 10 mins. I tried harder to get into it, but was incapable.

COD4 was a hit with me, though. Played that endlessly for months on PS3.

I do pretty well in free-for-all games. I come out in the top three maybe as often as 50% of the time. I'm bad at team deathmatch, though.
