Call of Duty 4 is AWFUL

Ok, I had heard a ton about CoD 4, and had never really read a negative review of it. It looked like the next step in evolution from BF 2 in a way. I bought it for the online play since that's what I look for...

So I start up and I think 'wow...the graphics are gorgeous....I love that the buildings can be shot through, and debris pile-up, cars exploding, all of it' and then every thought about the game since then has been negative. Where do I start??

1. 3/4 of the time you die, it's from grenades. Most online matches are just grenade chucking fests. Most of the time the person that kills you is behind a building or two down the street, and just blindly chucking grenades at you. I usually do decent in any FPS with a kill:death ratio around 1.3:1, which is fine for me. In this game I couldn't get better than 1:3, and it wasn't like I was dying in shootouts, which would actually be fun. Most lives, I would spawn, take two or three steps, and be dead from the grenades. I know you can lob them back at enemies....but that doesn't always work, and when they're cosntantly landing around you, you're gonna die sooner rather than later. And again, this was AWAY from the main action, these are grenades from people a couple buildings away just blindly chucking them like monkeys flinging their own feces.

2. The aimbotting/hacking is RAMPANT. I thought people were just bitching at first, but then I saw it for myself, it is AWFUL. Even servers that are good about kicking cheaters, it takes a few games to catch them, and they dominate for those few games...then they get kicked...then the next wave of people dominate until they get kicked for aimbotting or whatever. It's honestly worse than Diablo I was.

3. I don't know if it's the hit detection or what, but it feels LESS realistic than BF 2 (and I NEVER EVER EVER thought I'd be saying that). I can shoot someone in the face with 1/2 a clip....yet I get shot with a pistol in the knee and I die??? Riiiiight.

4. Snipers EVERYFUCKINGWHERE. Seriously, you step outside of a building on the edge of a map 2 blocks from any enemies....and somehow you get mowed down from 4 different angles by a snipers who're so badass they're probably banging every girl you love, or ever will love, all while murdering you.

I played for a couple weeks and I have to say it is the most frustrating disappointing gaming experience I have ever had. I wouldn't mind having a shitty kill:death ratio if I was actually getting in wicked fun fire-fights with other players....but it's all sniping, grenades, and cheap b.s. kills. Even most of the kills that I got were mostly B.S. I won't lie. The only fun I had was when me and several other players in a game decided to use only our knives. I ended up being at a 1:1 kill:death ratio that game, and it was the only time I ever did. Too bad, what a waste of a game.

Play on servers with few people. I like 20-25, 30 for a hectic battle. Beyond that, there are way too many grenades. To avoid the snipers, use smoke and sprint from cover to cover. I like to fight through buildings rather than in the streets to avoid snipers. And if you play Hardcore, everyone dies in 5 hits or less.

you know I never tried playing on less populated servers. I honestly didn't feel any difference gameplay wise with hardcore!

I agree with nearly everything you said, but it is not awful... maybe bad compared to BF2, but not an awful game (disclaimer: I have not played single player CoD4). I also find it far too fast paced, BF2 was just about right.

It is certainly not the next step of evolution of BF2, BF2 had more progressive gameplay.

Suggestions:
1. Play on servers that ban nade launchers
2. Play on "hardcore" servers that take fewer shots to kill people

Multiplayer is fun, but I thought single player CoD4 was lame. I know a lot of people love the end of Sgt Jackson's story, but it didn't do anything for me. And unlimited spawn points of the enemy was just ridiculous.

it's awesome on the xbox360 where it takes more skill to snipe, so you won't get instant headshotted necessarily
also, i believe that the max number of players on team deathmatch is 7v7?

if you play something like groundwars where it's like 10v10, there are a lot of grenades flying around (even on xbox live)

COD4 is MUCH, MUCH better on the 360 than on the PC
end of story

The PC version offers (the following over the 360 version) the ability to lean around corners, better graphics, loads of free custom / player made maps (and mods), the official map pack is free, does not use autoaim (I assume the 360 uses autoaim), faster load times (assumed on a fair system), wider variety of input options, likely allows more people per server than the 360 version. On paper (at least), it seems that the PC version is superior.

Something seems really wonky witht he accuracy,

You never seem to EVER miss.

Talking from the console versions, but from playing personally and observing this when friends played, every gun basically has perfect accuracy when zoomed down the sight. Basically at 500 meters, as long as you look down the sight, you can kill a person by spraying with a Machine Gun.

What the hell?

Yep, I hated it. Console players seem to absolutely love this game for some reason. I only played the PC version, but I didn't like it at all.

BF2? Boring.
Don't get me wrong. The game had potential. Until it was played online.

Try out Far Cry 2 when it comes out next month. Let me pimp my own thread.
More than one of the multi-player reviewers said it was more deliberately paced than COD 4. One likened it to Halo 3, if that helps you (I never played it, no console). The maps are more expansive, plus there is a 16 player limit. Check out some of the vids linked in the post.

BF2 has some pretty awesome multiplayer. Come on - you can battle by land, air, or water and you have 64 players on huge maps. The balance might be a bit off, though.

i didn't play it for the MP since it felt a bit like what you described.

for single player, i thoroughly enjoyed the story and the non-stop action. Unlimited respawn was teh ghey though.

MP never grabbed me, but I enjoyed the single player campaign very much, it was short but sweet.

Call of Duty 4 is like some horrible realistic weapons mod for Unreal Tournament. BF2 is so much better than it.

Play COD4 for the single player, which is pretty good. For multiplayer there a million better FPS games.

Huh? BF2's hitboxes and infantry combat suck in general. I do miss the vehicles, though.

You need to find a good set of servers that have a max no higher than 20 and that have good websites with forums so you can let them know about cheaters. Play hardcore and try and play in servers with no more than 10-15 people. Once you go over that the game becomes too chaotic and it sucks for all the reasons that you listed. Give it a chance. Once you get to know the maps and where people hide and stuff it become much more enjoyable and stick to objective based play, Sab, Dom, HQ, these types of game play encourage strategy and team work and not camping and spawn killing.

I dug it back out a week or two ago, as it's the first time I've had my PS3 online in more than a year. I was frustrated pretty quickly, though I assume it's b/c I never play FPS: if you run into me online, I'm the guy you see jumping face-first into a corner, trying to clear the map boundary like an idiot, shooting at your knees, etc.

glad to see that it's not so simply as "I suck."

Though, I enjoyed the single player, albeit quite short. Seemed innovative to me...of course, the last war-inspired FPS I played was some Medal of Honor game on PS1 :p

You should try the single player game, it was worth the time.
Good suggestions for the OP.

My own note to the OP, COD has always had a faster style gameplay. If I could add anything to Schadenfroh's suggestion it would be to look for a mature tactical COD server, maybe even look and see what TAC mods are available now, at least if you really want a taste of realism. ;)

I don't see why there is all the hating here for the multiplayer version. Find a good hardcore S&D server with nade spam rules and you should have a good time.
