Call me a dope, but what is it about Game of Thrones?

everybody seems to love this, but bar Big Bang Theory or 2 and a half men I don't watch much primetime shows.

er....with risk of embarrassment and/or "lolwuts", what's this show about? 😀 Only thing I do know it's that it's set in Ulster. 🙂

Hmm…. I haven't watched Big Bang Theory in years. Same goes for Two and Half Men.

But it's tough to directly compare sitcoms to fantasy/drama.

I am with you.

Aside from boobs and some really fucking hot chicks (i.e. Natalie Dormer), there isn't much of anything there. It's all sensationalist porn frankly; naked people, sex (,.. except the incest parts,..), gore, vengeance, backstabbing, etc. etc.

It's like a 12 year old's dream with high production value.

I just read the spoilers to see where this all going. Because I ask myself; what is the point to all of this? This being things like the red wedding, Gregor, etc.

I preferred reading the book to the TV show. Though I will say the entire series (book & TV) is rather long winded. Think of it as a soap opera set in a medieval fantasy setting, with boobs.

Some episodes are good, especially in the early seasons but overall an over rated show. There are better shows out there like Boardwalk Empire etc

Good to see the show is popular enough to spin off its own hispter affected disdain thread.

Stick with two and half men and Big Bang Theory. Now, that's quality TV!

Haven't seen any of it but it has to be decent given the rabid following it has, now Vikings I've seen every episode and think it's been one of the better shows I've seen in years if "Thrones" is anywhere near this level of production quality and casting then I'll defiantly have to start watching it, IIRC the first season is on Netflix since I don't have HBO.

You, Sir, have no taste.

Is game of thrones like True Blood?

I saw the season preview of the latter and literally started laughing on how asinine the plot is. People team up with vampires, but not all vampires, and then vampires can go out in the daylight, but then vampires cannot go out in the daylight. And vampires are having babies and making other vampires, but some of the making of other vampires is bad. Also literally all vampires have relationship problems discussed at nausea and there's a preponderance of infants with literally no plot value. DID A FUCKING 12 YEAR OLD GIRL WRITE THE SHOW??!?!

I gave up on the books when he split the fourth one (I think?) in two because he didn't have enough pages to get in all the detailed descriptions of lavish meals and young royals screwing that he originally planned. Of course, this resulted in a television contract.

The first book (the only one called Game of Thrones) does start off slow. It took GRRM about 150 pages to hit his stride.

LOL @ True Blood comment. That show... ugh. Okay. It may actually be worse than the two I mentioned. Well played.

Considering about half the episodes this season saw 7+ million people watching live on TV with easily just as many downloading illegally every week. It is a very popular show, probably one of the most popular shows in over a decade. Even the most popular prime time network shows (fox, CBS, etc) get 10M viewers on a good night. For a premium subscription only channel(HBO) to get that many viewers says something about the quality of the content.

My brother in law keeps refraining from telling me anything about the show because he wants me to borrow the DVD's from him. I keep telling him I probably won't get into it (based on what I've read/seen it's just not my type of show), but he insists that I'll start watching it and doesn't want to give me any spoilers.

He is REALLY, REALLY into this show, talks about it all the time. He's the type of guy that will tell you how the books were way better and go into extreme detail how it was different. Whenever I'm around though he asks everyone to be quiet so the details won't ruin it for me. It's kinda cool, I feel like I owe it to him to watch now.

Its basically a lot like 2 and half men. But they don't take 9 seasons to kill off Charlie Sheen and the half man is a dwarf who loves screwing whores.

Every single person I have made start watching it ended up watching every ep. in a week or two.

Give it a shot, get through the first season, if you still dont think it's worth your time then stop. But I haven't seen anyone stop after finishing the first season and I have introduced it to probably 5-6 people.

Yeah, you definitely should be embarrassed for admitting you like Big Bang Theory and 2 and a half men.

I tried the book too a few years ago. But couldn't get far, primarily because of the terrible writing. The complete lack of writing style and vocabulary. Something a mediocre high school student might come up with. It was a huge turn off, quite apart from all the fluff and filler (something that the show has a lot of too)

I think a more accurate description would be a soap opera for males. Just like a soap, the characters lack in depth, tend to be one dimensional, there is hardly any story movement most of the time, and a lot of scenes are just filler dialogues. Plus it has a lot of nudity, sex and violence, something which appeals to the male audience, especially the younger ones.

I'm not sure what book you read, but I don't think a lack of vocabulary or ostentatiously displayed educational achievement is Martin's problem.

The thing about Game of Thrones for isn't necessarily the story (been there, done that)... But for a TV show, it has pretty incredible production values. Feels like watching a movie. The production values are better than most movies (with heavy CGI) actually.

It's actually quite EPIC for a TV show in that regard.

You can always discuss quality of shows, but my guess is that 99% of people who have watched the show will continue to do so.
