C533A Owners: Is Your Slotket Holding You Back from +897MHz?

Fair enough Mark 🙂. You may just have to settle for 533MHz 🙁.

Have you checked the MSI site for any info? I don't know if they have a message board or not. You could be a real pioneer in 810 overclocking 🙂.
 
I got 2 of those MSI 6182 boards with the intent of setting up a couple more cpu test stations. If you will notice, there is only one overclocking jumper, not two as the manual says.
These were flaky for that purpose and I sold them off later.
The reason the boards were so cheap is they may have been seconds, or blems. I'm not trying to burst your bubble, just telling you what I see. 🙂
 
Ok, here we go. I got almost the same results on the IWill II as I did on the MSI MS-6905Master. So without further ado.

IWill II

850MHz (8.5x100) - 1.75v; Stable
876MHz (8.5x103) - 1.75v; Stable
952MHz (8.5x112) - 1.80v-1.90v; Will Post at 1.8v, and will load Win98 at 1.9v but is highly unstable. Again, I don't think it's temp related. The Alpha isn't really even warm and I'm using silver compound. It does seem a bit less stable than the MSI.

Ok, that seems to be fairly conclusive. At least as far as this motherboard is concerned. I have to recommend the MSI as best slotket I've tested yet.

It gets the Thorn "Thumbs Up" seal of approval. 🙂


I guess you guys think I don't have a life... I'll have you know I was watching the 13th Warrior on DVD (just got it this week) while doing all this tonight. No, I don't "go out" a lot... but I've seen what's "out there" and I'm not impressed. 😉

Test bed:

All Slotket tests done on an Abit BH6 R1.02 w/ newest BIOS. Using Sparkle 300W PS, Western Digital Expert 13.6GB HD, and Alpha PAL35 w/ silver compound. Win98 was the OS used for testing.


MSI MS-6905Master

850MHz (8.5x100) - 1.70v; Stable
876MHz (8.5x103) - 1.75v; Stable
952MHz (8.5x112) - 1.80v-1.90v; Will Post but is unstable, will load Win98 at 1.90v but crashes soon after... not temperature related (I'm using an Alpha PAL35 w/ silver compound).


Asus S370

850MHz (8.5x100) - 1.70v; Stable
876MHz (8.5x103) - 1.80v; Stable
952MHz (8.5x112) - 1.85v-1.90v; Will Post but is unstable, will not load Win98 at all.


IWill II

850MHz (8.5x100) - 1.75v; Stable (I had to go this high or UT would get buggy after 10min.)
876MHz (8.5x103) - 1.75v; Stable

Abit BM6 (no slotket, of course)

850MHz (8.5x100) - 1.60v; Stable

935MHz (8.5x110) - 1.70v; Stable
952MHz (8.5x112) - 1.70v; Stable


That's all my results in this testing. Like I said, the MSI seems to be the best overall of the slotkets I've tested. The BM6? It's just awesome to work with... but I think I was pretty lucky getting this one. They don't all seem to be this stable.

I don't think the jumper voltage on the slotket can INCREASE the voltage set in BIOS, only limit it. If you want more than 1.7v then you'll have to try the flash trick, but read my last post in your thread 🙂.

I think this would make an excellent review here at anand. I know this is information I could have used before buying slotket etc.

An article named something like

"Ultimate Overclocking components"

Also addressing the fact that different boards, from same pruducent, same board, same revision, can still perform differently when OC'in.. and a somewhat overview of the margins involved here.

Would make good reading.

Someone should give anand HQ a ring IMO.
 
Thorn and others: are you guys using the non-FCPGA slotket from MSI to overclock or the FCPGA slotket from MSI to overclock? I'm going to upgrade this/next week and would like to know which one gives me a better chance at the upper 800s with a 533a or a 566. And what's MSI's site? Thanks!

Call me too conservative, but I still think I'd prefer to use the FC-PGA compatible slotkets even if the PPGA ones seem to work and are possibly ever-so-slightly faster.
 
RB: I'm using the PPGA only MSI slotket simply because I had it laying around. The FCPGA MSI slotket seems to perform well also, so if you're unsure I'd agree with Eug and get that one.

Basically, it just appears that the MSI slotkets are slightly more stable than others, particularly on Abit mobos.
 
Thorn: Don't forget to throw the MSI PPGA only slotket into the mix. That seems to be the center of alot of confusion and apprehension, as you know (even though it works great for me). It would also be interesting to see if there's a performance difference between PPGA and FCPGA modes on slotkets offering both.
 
RB, I was using the FC-PGA version of the MSI (because it was the only one I could find locally). It seems to work very well... I've not noticed any degradation using FC "approved" slotkets over the older PPGA "only" units.

If I had to buy a new one I'd go with a FC compliant slotket, if for no other reason than the ability to run regular CuMines later on if I want.
