Me thinks his monthly rate would have been cheaper if he had owned his own cable modem. ;)
Actually, and this is I'm sure different for most people, Roadrunner charges a modem rental fee of $5 regardless of wether you own the modem or not
Considering RoadRunner is part of AOL-Time Warner, I'm not all that surprised. :(

Yeah, it's really excellent service here in central Florida, though. I'm really pleased with it :)

Going back to 56k is going to HURT...BAD!

I KNOW this because until recently, we just got broadband in this house we're renting...Having to revert back to dial-up in the meantime.

Because of all the hassle I had to deal with...I'm getting 3 months of free DSL (I put up with the hassle because DSL from Verizon was the ONLY option in my area). Then Cable Internet just became available.

...Well, now I've got DSL AND Cable!!! If 1 goes down, I've got backup!

:)

Oh, you guys (and gals ;) ) are too much! I'm mostly LMAO here!

Yes, flash movies will suck. Music DLs will suck. OS updates will suck. Waiting for AT forums to load a full page sucks! When that nookie store closes up. . . it's gonna. . . well. . . um. . . SUCK!

I paid $44.95 per month to RoadRunner, and they included their modem in that price. (They called it "free" modem rental when I signed up.)

I'm sure I will be back on broadband sometime, but for now, summer's coming. I do like to get out and enjoy the few comfortable months we have in Minnesota.

I'm sure I can get that introductory rate again, too. ;)

(Posted via dial-up. At least I get a 50.6 Kbps. . . ah, nevermind. Even good dial-up sucks. I think I'll go watch a DVD. :( )

Ah, well, it's for the best, or so I keep telling myself. I'm not home so much anymore now that I have a girlfriend. My need for a fast porn DL has also diminished significantly. So, I'm going with a local ISP of good repute that only charges $8.99 per month with 6 month billing. $44.95 is too hard to justify when I'm a student looking to buy a new car soon and trying to save for a decent down payment on a home.

I'm on my way to return the modem to the cable company now.

Wish me luck, say a prayer, or pour out a 40 oz. This is going to be rough, this break-up. :(

It's nice to see someone who has their priority's straight Garfang, good luck :)

Yes. The cable modem will still be there when the girlfriend is long gone. Keep the cable.

I'm a student looking to buy a new car soon...

F that! Been driving 30 years now and NEVER owned a new car. This is the trick that allowed us to keep our heads above water, yet still have quite a few luxuries all these years. It allowed my wife to stay home and raise our children, which is no small accomplishment these days. We thought about buying a new vehicle last year for a few days. Then we came back to our senses... life with NO car payments is MUCH easier!

At least your cable company will service you 24/7. Will your girlfriend service you 24/7?

Having a girlfriend does NOT consitute the excuse to give up your cable! If anything, cable (and downloading massive porn) should replace your girlfriend! Trust me... I know... once your relationship ends... you will come crawling back to porn.

You're probably right. Of course, I'm not thinking BMW or WRX here. I'm thinking Civic HX coupe for $14,000.

The problem is, I don't have $14,000 (plus $900-1000 tax!). I probably have $2000 to put down on a car, which means about $260 monthly car payment for 5 years. Then there's the additional insurance on a new car. I already pay enough as it is.

I'll probably come back to my senses too. (I'm tired of constantly repairing/maintaining my old cars though.)

Only reason I even considered it, was because the imports hold their value so high. Didn't make sense to buy a several year old Odyssey for only a few thousand less than a new one. Of course, in the end we opted against it.

My last used "Ford" was purchased in 1982 when it was already 5 years old. I drove it till last year, and it may still be on the road. There were relatively few repairs during that time, and parts were a damn sight cheaper than import parts... easier to install too! Personally, I'd rather take advantage of the domestic's lower used prices. It's worked well for me over these last 3 decades. All you gotta do is pick the right one.

Don't forget, with two people, you'll need two cars, or more. This strategy doubles in savings then. If you do get married or start living together, you'll be money ahead buying a house, rather than renting. How do you save a down payment when your money is all spent on transportation? Sure, you'll both have new cars, but what a waste to have to rent! You'll need 20% down to avoid paying for Private Mortgage Insurance... I can think of a lot of good reasons to cut corners on cars! The money saved makes cable modem fees look like chicken feed!

You're so right, and I probably won't go through it. There are plenty of good choices that I can get for an amount that I can easily save in a short time. But I want it!

Exactly!

My cable modem was down - I signed up for AOL last night - got a decent connection, 49.3k, but it's still a drag.. Cable modem was fixed today, and I already cancelled AOL. :D
