from what i've seen, the only small tube hdtv's that look awesome are the super fine dot pitch sony widescreens. course those cost more. the others have the normal big ass coarse phosphor dots. only so much resolution u can get out of those no matter the specs. course some hd is better than no hd at all. atleast you get to do the squeeze and get teh full resolution out of dvds with that one.

anyway you would consider a 42" projection?

You'll get a bigger sceen and better quality to boot.

Nah, gonna stick to a physical tv. Projection just doesn't do it for me. I might just go for that 30" samsung. And to think before I posted on here I was 100% going to get that Sony, lol.

Rear projection is a physical TV, you're thinking front projection.

I'm personally still a huge tube fan. Yes the size is nice, and my next TV will probably be RP of some sort (likely DLP) but tube is still king of image quality IMO. Just like the PC monitor CRT vs LCD debate.

In any case, I found this samsung for $899 :

Seems like a good set and fits in the space I need.

what kind of shows do you watch? sports? movies? primetime shows?

because those are in HD

even the local dodgers game ... it's not in HD, but somehow, it's in widescreen

Any opinions/experience with http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/120404/rpem/ccd/productDetailReview.do#tabs ?

Samsung looks nicer, but not sure if there are any technical consequences to that "slimfit" design...

Yes, but "regular TV" is going to be widescreen soon enough. Many (most?) HDTV programs are widescreen. In a few years, EVERYTHING you watch on a 4:3 TV is going to be letterboxed...

Do you have any idea how many years (decades?) I've been hearing that? Go here and click the "HDTV Only" option. I don't know about you, but I ain't seeing nothin' worth spending big bucks on a TV for. Then, there's the whole current DVD issue...

Did you know that all local channels in NYC are now broadcasting HDTV in full power now? I live in NJ, and get then all with a $20 antenna. How do you get your channels now?

Sony 30" i currently have ($950).
Be careful, there are TWO 30" wide sony tubes out there. the link here is the one with Super Fine Pitch...it was worth it for ME. i recommend you go to the store, put both 30" on REGULAR tv (non-hd content) and see which one you like.

One more thing: Are the actual screen sizes on all 30" 16:9 relatively the same? What would the dimensions be?

You don't buy a big ticket item like a TV without looking at what will be out there tomorrow. Yeah, widescreen programming isn't pervasive yet, but it will be. Even now, if you can get HDTV channels and watch a lot of primetime shows, many of them are in widescreen, and the trend is on the rise.

Seriously, do you care to guess how many years? Go ahead, take a guess!
