Is there any disadvantage from buying phones and a plan from a third party, like BB or Amazon, or other company on the internet instead of from the wireless provider? The phones seem to be quite a bit cheaper for a new plan.

Also, can I still get my company discount (on activation and monthly costs) if I don't go directly through the wireless company? I tried calling them about that but didn't get anywhere.

And if anyone knows, what decent phone can I get from AT&T for $50 or under? I really just need basic voice service.

One of the reasons the phones from 3rd party vendors is because they subsidize them on top of the subsidy from the carrier. Often times you are required to get a certain plan, or features which ups the monthly fee for a couple months to even out the subsidy (the wireless provided gives a kickback to the 3rd party vendor if you sign up for the $59/month plan or whatever).

That said, I'm not entirely sure if discounts would be allowed, I don't see why not, but I don't know. Also, I'm not sure how warranties would work. I've never bought a phone though a 3rd party.

Make sure you look at the contract terms going thru a 3rd party. Amazon for instace has a clause that says if you make any changes in you plan in the first 6 month, they will charge you $180. What happens if you need a plan with more minutes or want to add/change text messaging or data? They can hit you for that fee. If you feel confident you wont be changing anything, it may be ok to go that way, but Id like the freedom to add/remove things whenever I wanted.
