Well, I think that narrows your choices down to the Passat, Maxima or 3-Series. (Funny how to "sporty" Acura doesn't have a manual tranny...) All 3 of those are great cars, so it all depends what you are looking for. I'd be happy to drive any of them.

For a little American flavor, I can recommend the Grand Prix GT or GTP for a coupe, and the Olds Intrigue for a 4 door. Tiger Wood's personal ride, the Buick Regal GS, isn't too shabby either. They all share the same basic platform, but have very different drive train and interior designs.

And I'll put the new 3.5L V6 in the Olds up against any V6. It eats BMW 6's for lunch, although that CL Type S motor is admittedly some stiff competition.

I think that the A4 is the same as a Jetta not a Passat. The A6 is the same as a Passat. The Jetta and the A4 used the same frame at one time. Don't know if its the newer or older generation of the cars that shared the same frame. Anyways, get a VW they're great.

MAXIMA!!!

Just make sure its the SE and 5-speed.

My friend was in the exact same situation as you last year, and since he knew nothing of cars he came to me. after a few months of research, I honestly believe the maxima was the best buy, but he went Acura CL because he was more interested in being a luxury whore. He likes it, but frankly, I consider it way to much of a boat, and ALL the power is top end. Plus the triptronic thing blows.

Get a real Type-R - its faster than a porsche.

No, but really, the Maxima recommendation was top-notch. Those things rule, they are inexpensive for the size - FAST, and they look good. Get the SE, you won't be dissapointed, its way more impressive a vehicle than a frigging passat :p The Acura recommendation was also sound, both the maxima and acura sedans are sweet - oh just saw you need a manual. Thats good, the maxima it has to be then.
