The 2002 car has 27,000 miles on it but it looks to be covered under the manf. warranty until 60K miles. Are rental cars as bad as I've heard?

I don't think so :) IF the price is right, jump on it. The Budget Rent-A-Car dealership (the sell used rentals, they don't rent) here sells virtually every make and model, and they offer some GREAT prices ;) I've driven a few, and they were pretty nice.

I work for Hertz and I can tell you that they have very very strict PM and Maintenance requirements for all of our cars, they have to go through quite an inspection when sold.

Usually rental/fleet cars have very regimented maintenance schedules, plus if the manufacturers warranty is still good you are covered if something does go bad in the near future.

You might get lucky and get a car that wasn't beat on... or you might not.

Not really any way to tell, I guess.

Haha! I am always hard on them. Not out of spite, but because simply it's not my car. I know many others are as well. I wouldn't consider a rental car unless it was like 20% below KBB at least.

I've never owned a car I didn't beat on ;) I'd say buying from Hertz could be a bit of a crap shoot. I bought an Olds Intrigue from Budget once, never had any problems with it that I wouldn't have had if I, say, bought it new

My Sebring convertible was a former Budget rental car. It's been a typical Chrysler (rebuilt engine at 70k miles - whew...extended warranty...rebuilt transmission at about 100k miles...replaced tie rods/ends...stitching on convertible top tearing.) All of that I wouldn't blame on it being a rental...just a damn Chrysler.

lol, :) Im the same way!

Keep in mind that the title will note that it's a former rental, so whatever you save might be eaten up in resale hit.
It's only a few notches above buying a salvage car in my opinion.

I can't speak for everyone, but I know when I get a rental, I beat the hell out of it...

Even though they have great maintenance, but a rental car subjects to much more abuse than your car, regardless of care.

tell us some details, how much and what make/model...that would be more helpful

but in general, I am open to all options. If they offered me a warranty, I would buy it in a minute (the warranty that is)

Its a 2002 Mitsu Galant with 27,000 miles onit. They're asking $8500, but I really couldn't tll you what kind of options it comes with (probably 4cyl, auto everything, and keyless entry). The car itself is like an hour away at another Hertz location so they couldn't show it to my dad. He did say something about a warranty we could purchase for like $900 but didn't go into much detail aout it.
