Buying a 32" HDTV with a food stamps card...

I sell electronics for a store (perfect for my experience and knowledge while being in school). Last night a woman with 2 kids paid for a 32" HDTV with a food stamps card that does cash and food stamps from the state. She had me check the balances of the card and saw that there was $600 on the food stamps portion and $270 on the cash portion. This woman had *3* car keys (w/ fobs) on her key-ring to different cars and CLEARLY didn't her food stamps card. My wife and I share 1!

I hate knowing that my taxes go towards shit like this. Fuck her.

according to msnbc, more states are considering drug testing welfare users. They will get "just deserts".

If you are claiming the woman used a food stamp card to pay for a tv you are either working for an illegal retailer or are completely mistaken.

If you pm with the name of the store I will see to it they get investigated.

It was cash assistance. The food stamps were separate in the OP.

It's amazing that people don't know that EBT cards have cash benefits as well as the food stamp benefits.

The cash benefits can be used just like your own debit card, for the most part. There are few restrictions on what you can buy directly, and you can withdraw cash and buy whatever you want, anyway.

I knew they had cash benefits (my ex-sister in law abuses the hell out food stamps and such).

But i figured they were on a different card something like a visa debit card.

It isn't a "food stamp card" it is an EBT card, EBT include cash assistance or welfare money. This is faux outrage as these people must be allowed to spend their money as they wish.

Ignorance. Considering that this is taxpayer money they dont have the right to spend it as they want

the idea behind the cash was never to buy liquor, or electronics. It was to help offset bills such as electric, phone, Emergency situations, food etc.

TANF was to be used for what ever the family felt it needed for living cost. The befits are small too only a few hundred a month, they can spend it how they want.

I disagree.

they want that luxury they need to earn that money. Not be given with my tax money.

I am for helping those that need it. If they need food great, electricity? yeah needed, a HOME phone? sure. heat? duh!

but there has to be a line. A TV? fuck no. go get a job if you want a new TV.

Should people on SSI be limited to what they can purchase?

You mean spend someone elses money they didn't earn. It's supposed to be assistance, not a lifestyle choice.

All benefits should be done with a cashless card and the purchased items restricted.

Its not amazing.

I remember running through an automated check out line and being confused about WTF and EBT payment was? Did my debit card count as an EBT card?

I assume that they are called EBT to hide the shame of having a Food-stamp or welfare card.

SSI is not welfare.

They are both government assistance for people without employment. They are both funded by general tax revenue. There is no reason one should be able to purchase a TV and one not.

didn't most of them contribute a large portion of their lives paying contributions? As opposed to . . . . not?

No, people on SSI never contributed anything. You are thinking of SSA/SSDI which is totally different.

There is every reason.

In one case someone cannot work, in the other they can.
