Actually I don't think he did bad... my guess on prices would be...

motherboard - $100
CPU - $200
RAM - $300
video card - $300
Hard drive - $80
PSU - $50
case - <$50

and he said the monitor was $400... so that leaves $800 for the rest of it, and my estimates come to over $1000.
