Unreal 2 is known to be insanely tough on frame rates (much worse than UT2K3). But on my lowly Radeon 9500 pro at those AA/AF settings (peformance AF, everything else on max) on a slightly slower system than yours (XP2000+, KT400 mobo, 512MB PC333), I routinely get in the 30-50 range on average game play. It's true that during heavy firefights I've seen it dip down into the low teens, however. But I'm sure the 9800 on a comparable system does considerably better (especially at minimum rates), and quite a bit better on a faster system with a better processor. If not, I would suspect there's something funny about the game that may not be representative of future titles.
That being said, I too also expect the NV35 will outperform the 9800 once it's released (and the ATI R400 will beat the N35, etc, etc). But given that its still damn near impossible to find an FX (NV30) locally where I live (in a major Canadian city), I don't expect to see the NV35 for some time to come!
I realize that may not be so great an issue for most of you shopping at newegg, but it sure is an issue north of the border (where newegg won't ship). Around here, you could get a 9700 Pro for as little as $315 US while the best local price for the 5800FX Ultra I've seen is $480! That makes any local choice pretty easy at present, and I suspect the eventual NV35 will also be priced less than competitively around here.
