If it was in your room you are responsible for it. Couple guys who I lived with did the same thing & were busted.

Should have stuck it in a closet but I can't blame you for not knowing about that law. I'm an RA and we have to do room inspections before every major break and street signs are specifically mentioned as items students can't have in their room.

We're just supposed to confiscate them though and give a JR (Judicial Referral); calling the cops is stupid and definitly a power trip on your RA's part. If it was me I'd just call my family or campus lawyer or talk to the DA and get it dropped.

damn that sucks about the fine. I took a "High Road" sign when I was in school at Tallahassee......it was near my apts and some drunk had run the pole over so my roomate and I took our tools out near the sign, drugg it to the ditch and removed it from the pole.

obviously you didn't buy a street sign, obviously it was stolen off a street sign, so obviously you're in possession of stolen goods, which is a crime.

Over ten years ago some kids in the neighborhood I knew through cars were having an underage party with 2 kegs. The night before they had gone on a sign stealing spree and stole quite a few signs. The party was at an apartment so of course they got raided by the police that not only found the 2 kegs of beer but the stack of signs. They were crapping their pants. Luckily for them the cops back then here were pretty cool and only confiscated their beer and then told them to "give those signs to Ron, you know him right?, he will make some neat stuff out of the aluminum" and let them go. It was hilarious because the next day they came into my garage with a stack of signs telling me the cops had told them to bring them to me. At that time I knew every cop in the neighborhood and had for at least 15 years since highschool....when you are a car guy knowing the cops is a MUST.

I have a huge collection of road signs. I use the aluminum for custom car pieces. I have never stolen even one sign. I used to buy them at garage sales/flea markets, bought them from the scrap metal place, or had people give them to me. My neighbor works for a small city about 30 miles away and whenever they retire signs he brings them home to me. I don't know any cops these days so I keep them well hidden behind a tool box now and only pull them out ot cut off a piece to make something. I doubt I would get in trouble for them anyway. Your dorm director sounds like a douche. I would have left you alone if it was me....or simply given you the opportunity to ditch the sign yourself if it was really a problem.

Dude, I am SOOOO turning State's Evidence on you!

I got a date with a girl one time by giving her a sign she said she saw with her name on it. She thought it was sweet that I stole it for her .

For 20 bucks, buy some mari-ji-wana, go out to the douche's car, and hide it in the underside of his car. Wait for the douche to go somewhere and then call in an anonymous tip to the campus police with his license plate.

Hilarity ensues.
