I remember when I was an RA for my college dorm we would do full sweeps of the rooms when students left for long vacations like Christmas or Spring break.

Generally, we were checking to make sure nothing was left plugged in or turned on that might be a fire hazard - but we'd also check for things that shouldn't be in the room that are in plain sight, like drugs, alcohol, weapons.... or in your case, street signs. :)

I'll have to edit my post tomorrow when I have time, but my last semester my roomies and I were caught off campus with street signs, and University signs ("reserved parking for the President" sign was my fav.), and we were charged with a misdemeanor (petty larceny), plead guilty, and had to complete pre-trial intervention (PTI) program (about $1k in total fees and 40 hours of community service) to get the charge expunged from our records....

FUN TIMES!

Street signs can be purchased too. They need to prove one was missing and that your sign is that missing sign.

I got rid of all my street signs a long time ago when I saw that gas truck t-bone a short bus after I stole that stop sign.

Do NOT do their job for them.
That they would lay that sort of crap on you is typical of the police state mentality that is perverting our justic esystem.
BTW, you're innocent until proven guilty.

Besides, what goes around comes back around and rattin' is never a good thing.

Lawyer up and make them EARN their fine, chances are you'll get the charge reduced and only have to do community service.
The only thing you should be pleadin' to is POSSESSING City / University property unlawfully.

just from the quick read, I'm pretty sure that if you bring a lawyer into this, the fine will either be lowered dramatically or dropped altogether. The cop has already said that he can't prove that you stole it, he's just used to the average scared college student.

So, I get back from spring break tonight, and I get a call on the phone. I believe it was the chief of police, and he said that he wants to come talk to me and my roomate tonight. (My roomate's not back yet) and he wants to talk to both of us before 11 tonight.

Thing is, I don't know if he's just gonna bvtch at us and just give us a warning, or what...

And, I didn't actually steal the sign off the road, I took it from a party, and just left it in the corner of my dorm room. I have abosuletely no idea how to even get the sign off the post thing on the side of the road.

Anything I can tell him to my benefit? BTW the sign was a "9th Street" sign, not a stop sign, or something that could cause a major accident....

edit: they inspect the dorms after we leave for spring break to make sure the lights are off, tv, heat, shades closed...
He said my hall director called them about it...

Update: Talked to the cop,(university cop) my roomate was there the whole time, but he didn't get charged cuz he was actually away the weekend I grabbed it. I told the cop that I found it next to the dumpster behind some apartments. He was like, "ya, I can't prove that you either took it or found it, so its gonna be "theft of item below $100"" The fine was for $285 :Q

What he did say that caught me off guard was that he was gonna hold the citation for a week, and if I can find someone dealing drugs, making fakes, or other theft, the citation would be handeled internally, and not go through the courts, and it would most likely be less of a fine.

I know plenty of people selling ******, and fakes, but the problem is finding someone I don't like and have evidence against them. I didn't even know cops could do this to teens, and I HATE the idea of being a rat/narc.

One of the guys on my floor has a family of lawyers, so hes gonna see what they can do. I have over a month before my court date, april 28th, so ill have to see what I want to do. Don't they have to PROVE that theft occured, and not just charge me with it?

Talk to your school's legal services (free lawyers), chances are it will get dropped. I don't see how they're planing on charging you with a misdemeanor theft with absolutely no evidence.

In either case, get a lawyer. Misdemenor Theft looks really bad to prospective empleyers.

We have a giant Highway 59 sign in our window, and three or four "End School Zone" signs in our room. None of the campos have ever hasseled us about it before, and we've had them in our room before (we saw cops we liked walking by and invited them in).

I guess our campos are just cooler than yours.

I got caught up in my schools legal system for a few weeks. Went to court, plead my case, most of the carges got dropped. I was basically left with a warning and small fine. I was also probally in alot more trouble then you are looking at. Go to court, fight it, don't take any plea bargins.

You said that you have tons of friends that deal right? Score some from them, put it in a little brown baggy, slip it under your RA's door, right after that or as your doing it say call campus security saying that you saw someone suspicious slipping something under your RA's door, badda bing they get busted for the dope you laugh your ass off.

I did that once on place that forgot to add taxes to their meals after one day of really bad service I phoned the IRS. The next week they were shut down. Never piss off a son of an account if you?re a business.

Wow.

I remember there was a warehouse in Berkeley close to railroad tracks where they had all kinds of street signs laying around. I passed the hangar many times, and the huge doors were always ajar and signs out - liek they were having a sale or smth. I never stopped by, but always toyed an idea of buying/grabbing myself a 'stop' or 'men at work' sign or smth of that sort.

Over ten years ago some kids in the neighborhood I knew through cars were having an underage party with 2 kegs. The night before they had gone on a sign stealing spree and stole quite a few signs. The party was at an apartment so of course they got raided by the police that not only found the 2 kegs of beer but the stack of signs. They were crapping their pants. Luckily for them the cops back then here were pretty cool and only confiscated their beer and then told them to "give those signs to Ron, you know him right?, he will make some neat stuff out of the aluminum" and let them go. It was hilarious because the next day they came into my garage with a stack of signs telling me the cops had told them to bring them to me. At that time I knew every cop in the neighborhood and had for at least 15 years since highschool....when you are a car guy knowing the cops is a MUST.

I have a huge collection of road signs. I use the aluminum for custom car pieces. I have never stolen even one sign. I used to buy them at garage sales/flea markets, bought them from the scrap metal place, or had people give them to me. My neighbor works for a small city about 30 miles away and whenever they retire signs he brings them home to me. I don't know any cops these days so I keep them well hidden behind a tool box now and only pull them out ot cut off a piece to make something. I doubt I would get in trouble for them anyway. Your dorm director sounds like a douche. I would have left you alone if it was me....or simply given you the opportunity to ditch the sign yourself if it was really a problem.

Sounds kind of like blackmail when he mentioned finding someone else breaking the law in order for you to get off...

I'd call a local DA and let them know what happened and tell them you're worried hemight be treaing actual criminals in the same fashion and ask them what you should do.

They have no proof you stole it. You could just tell them you had a party, yadda yadda, you now have a street sign in your room. They can't prove you guilty or innocent and seems like they'd drop the cahrges. Even if you do go through court, plead ignorance. You don't know who's it is or how it got there.

FYI you do have the sign on you. What you are really being charged with is Theft by Reception of item under $100. They cant charge you with theft by taking.

Seriosuly, those signs are expensive and talk about being inconsiderate, I live in a college town and it sucks when I am looking for a particular street and all the signs within 5 blocks have been stolen.
