... you're pissed because people are going out of their way to be nice? What a fail of a rant. Does it waste a few seconds here and there? Sure. Are they being kind out of the warmth of their hearts? No, most likely not. But don't you think you could have wasted our valuable time with a less absurd rant?

They are not going out of their way to be nice. They are being paid to provide you with fake friendliness which is awkward and annoying.

And, don't try to act as if your time is valuable, if it were you wouldn't be posting on an internet forum.

WTF? This is weak. Do you honestly think that these people genuinely care about you that much to be that nice? Not a chance (maybe a few weirdos are sincere). They aren't doing it out of the goodness of their heart. They are doing it because they are paid to, and will most likely get in trouble if they don't say what they are required to.

I'm willing to bet you aren't that awesome where everyone everywhere you go is trying to legitimately be your friend. And hell, if you actually ARE, are you taking any more applications??

ummmm...maybe you should read the OP again. I don't think these people are acting like this because I am just that cool. I understand they are acting like this because they are paid to and I think its a stupid business tactic. I like normal people over fake people as do a lot of others.

You're right, it is a business tactic. One that is proven to work. Just because you can clearly see through it does not mean it isn't effective on people.

Can you tell me where I said that this tactic scares me? There is a difference between someone being polite and someone being paid to be overly polite. People can act like a normal person and still be polite, it doesn't have to be over the top and fake.

I've worked some pretty mundane jobs in the past and the only thing that kept me going was mixing it up and pretending to be ultra polite some days just to see the reactions I'd get.

I could see how an a-social nerd would hate friendly people. All you want to do is go through the world with as little human interaction as possible. It sucks when you break out in a cold sweat when normal people talk to you, doesn't it?

Your best option is to stay in your mother's basement and have her do the shopping for you from now on.

They absolutely are going out of their way, even if it's scripted lines from the boss. Going out of your way isn't defined by motivation. They're going above the norm, that's it.

Oh, sorry, I was just being blunt. I apologize if you were offended, I thought you didn't like the pretenses of being kind. 😉 I suppose you actually do.

That you would even post that explains why they're rude to you. 😛

Where are you in Louisiana?

New Orleans.[/quote]

Ah. New Orleans is really a block-by-block kind of place. Some blocks are pretty nice, some are horrible. Also, watch out for non-natives. They're the people who constantly talk about how awesome New Orleans is.

Move to Kingston, NY. When you try to strike up a conversation with random people, they look at you like you have wings and six eyes.

You are obviously in tech support because you don't have a clue about customer service.

Yeah, I know. I grew up here 😛

Got out of this shithole as soon as I could (college).

I fully understand your OP, and that you hate the business tactic. That's fine and dandy.

My point is that the people that are being polite, it's not their tactic. I'm sure they hate it as much, if not more, than you do. No sense in getting mad at them for it and acting annoyed.

I tend to agree with you.
A greeter at the bank is ridiculous.

We went to one of the BB pet stores this weekend and there was a "Greeter" there.

It was almost like he was being sarcastic...

I'm with you, If the person there just said, "hello" or "thanks" when you leave I'd appreciate that much more than this fake "HAVE A GREAT DAY AND PLEASANT TOMORROW" bullshit.

You probably have social anxiety. Others talking to you using sentences that contain more than 5-7 words are likely the biggest obstacle you face. While you claim that "you're not scared", truth is, you don't realize your shortcomings. I highly advise you seek help.

Of course, you only read two sentences. But those two are the most important. As are these past two.

"So, can I get you gentlemen something more to drink? Or maybe something to nibble on? Some Pizza Shooters, Shrimp Poppers, or Extreme Fajitas?"

I agree with the OP. There's few things that annoy me more than phony over-politeness.

The only thing worse is when you go to businesses (restaurants seem to be the worst offenders) that try to make things unnaturally fun. Think places like TGI Fridays. Just get the order correct and us alone.

EDIT: I missed the Office Space reference above, but yah, it's pretty much just like that. It also brings up the thing I hate the most about restaurants: when they give overly cute names to menu items. Fuck that.

Great movie.

The absolute worst is when someone (a stranger) calls you by your first name. At the end of a bank transaction, the teller at my bank usually goes, "Have a nice day, Travis." I really would just love to turn around and punch those bitches in the nose. Or how about if some enlightened customer calls you by your first name because they can read your nametag.

Would you feel better if they just called you "Asshole?"

I can tell you that about 90% of the friendliness you get from people who do customer service is fake. Some of us have done it so long it comes naturally. I have my fake laugh, my fake 'humoring responses (when I have to act like I care about your problem) etc
