Report says Bush sought Vatican help
Conservative themes addressed
By Anne E. Kornblut and Glen Johnson, Globe Staff | June 14, 2004

WASHINGTON -- On his most recent overseas trip, President Bush reportedly asked Vatican officials earlier this month to promote socially conservative values in the United States more aggressively -- a further sign that the Catholic Church and its members could play a key role in this year's presidential campaign.

Bush, whose reelection strategy hinges in part on winning support from highly religious voters, told a Vatican official that "not all the American bishops are with me" on social issues, according to an article in the independent journal National Catholic Reporter. Bush focused especially on gay marriage, the article said.

I guess he forgot that the Pope was vehemently opposed to his ill advised excellent adventure in Iraq!

I expect with divine intervention God will alter the voting records of the key swing states so to enable a second term for Mr. Bush. The Lord works in mysterious ways and uses the least among us at times to effect his will... It seems to me this might be one of those times.
Bush don't need the bishops he needs the Secretaries of State of the various swing States to align in his camp. He is misdirecting his efforts. He should listen to the whispers lest he be castigated and changed into a caterpillar.

Yeah, beat us Catholics down with that traditional, old school technique called guilty conscience.

Our local preist has been brow-beating everyone for volounteers with "its a priviledge to clean God's house". The fine print is that the Catholic Church doesn't view churches as the Church, but rather the people. Churches are considered as holy ground BUT not God's home. You, my friends, is God's real home. You and me.

I think we're right on track for WWIII - Radical Judeo-Christians vs. Radical Muslims. The Middle East is doing their part - Bush is just trying to keep the West on track...

The Cold War was a World War? Like Vietnam and Korea were "Police Actions" instead of "Wars"?

So is this campaigning during an official visit. That's what the article makes it seem like.

If that's the case then Team Bushwhacked needs to refund the taxpayers' subsidy.

there really aren't many radical catholics. and the ones who are tend to be too old for fighting ;)

I can't see the Pope carrying much about Bush's re-election campaign, though. Bush = protestant.

For some reason I never thought of that. I guess we need to make sure the major religious figures are involved before we start a religious war

Hmmm... Looks like the terrorists from both sides are counting on help from their respective deities.

AFIC, when it comes to U.S. elections, the Pope should STFU! :|

All the presidents have met with the pope as far back as I can remember (which isn't that long).
As our leader he should take into consideration the concerns of the Catholic church sine that is a large part of the public.
Catholic and Christian values align in many key areas.

I agree but instead of bending his policies for the church, hes pleading the church to bend their views for him.

Why don't you have such an objection to Islamic influence on Middle Eastern governments?

Where do you think we live? Do we live in the Middle East or do we live in AMERICA?

No, it says he asked the church to promote socially conservative values more aggressively.
The Catholic church is already promoting these values in its sermons.
I was at a High Mass last month and the priest made strong points about
gay sex, gay marriage, contraception, and abortion.
Kerry may be Catholic but he is not opposing any of these issues.
I think it is clear alot of Catholics who are likeminded on these issues are going to have to put alot of thought into voting for Bush.

Hey bug, is it true that a thousand years ago the christian church held that the earth is flat and the center of the universe? If that was accepted as fact by all the retarded followers back than, how about thinking outside of what it tells you now, since it might be wrong AGAIN.

Lay off the drugs infected mushroom. Everyone thought the earth was flat a thousand years ago, if they thought about it at all that is.
People still had alot of knowledge back then even if they did not know everything. It certainly doesn't say the world is flat in the Bible.

Bugs, get yer facts right, it was known far before christianity that the earth was not flat, scientists that had found out that the earth was not flat (copernicus was one of them I tough) were either burned as enemies of the church or (the somewhat more famous ones) forced to publically denounce their knowledge and state again that the earth was flat, so the church then had definetly some need to keep the people thinking that the earth was flat and the centre of the universe.
