Burress' eventual replacement?

I was thinking this:

The Giants are actually pretty lucky that the whole mess with Burress went down this way. They got good value for him when he initially signed - leading them to a SB win. After the win he got his big pay day and his production dropped way off, he was plagued with injuries, and didn't want to practice.

I would think there was some stipulation in his contract that would allow the Giants to void it without any cap penalties for being injured in a non football related incident.

The player that I'm thinking the Giants could probably pay the same amount of money and get similar production would be the Bengal's Houshmanzadeh. I think he would fit nicely in the Giants system - and he has handled himself fine despite having a big mouthed, strange teammate in Ocho....er Johnson

the guy that has been playing in place of him has done a pretty solid job from what i've seen. i don't know why they'd pick up another possession receiver when they already have a few in toomer & smith.

Yeah i agree. The giants are pretty stacked and Hixon is starting to come out as well

Hixon and Smith are very young. Toomer is on his last legs. I think both Hixon and Smith could learn a ton from TJ in the process.

The Giants suspended him because if they cut him they would owe him a lot of money and it would hurt them next year for the salary cap.

Hixon has been looking good. Im hoping Manningham gets some playing time out of this as well.

as far as this year, Domenik Hixon will be fine.

Next year they'll have Steve Smith, Manningham, and superbowl hero David Tyree stepping it up

They did it last week perfectly fine.

Hixon is really stepping up and showing what he's got. Can't wait to see what happens.

Yep. Let's not forget the Giants won the Super Bowl with contributions from the rookies as well so there is no question the young players we have can step it up.

It's no coincidence that the Giants two best offensive performances this season were the two games that Burress sat out. It's addition by subtraction, much like the Shockey departure. Get the whining, look-at-me-divas off the roster, and everyone is better as a result.
Besides, that's why the NFL has a draft every April. To replace veterans who shoot themselves during the season.

I still think it's only a matter of time when the NFL d's figure out the g-men and they are left without that go to WR. You guys can talk up Hixon, smith, manningham all you want but they are still young, unproven WRs.

I'm not a giants fan but I love dynasties and root for them to be sucessful. Nothing pisses me off more then some fly by night contender.

His contract really isn't that bad overall though, they'll be able to cut him after the season and not be screwed on the salary cap.

I'd love to see Manningham get some more game time! Jake Long's doing well, Breaston's doing great with the Cards...at least it'll give Michigan fans something football-related to cheer about 😛

Burress... to Dallas? they'll take anyone!!

the giants will need a downfield deep threat reciever if they want to continue to have the ground game success they are having now...

For all you Gmen fans that thought you could get by without Buresss I guess today was a rude awakening. I bet you guys really coulda used someone like TJ today to make a big play - however, that might not have mattered with the way Eli played.

It was said in the very first reply over a month ago - TJ is a possession receiver, not big play.

Calvin Johnson is pretty much the 1 player the Lions aren't willing to trade

TJ is a great WR, period - Hixon, Smith, and little S.Moss can be their speed guys - I think TJ to the Giants would be a great move

Could probably get someone like Braylon Edwards in a trade as well

While that's true, he simply wouldn't fill the role that Burress played. You can have the best hands in the world, but that often doesn't mean as much as height. When you have a target as big and fast as Burress, you don't have to be as accurate, especially on the low percentage deep balls.

Calvin Johnson isn't going anywhere. After he plays out his contract the Lions will probably franchise tag him for a year. The man will be making serious money for the next few years. It's scary to think about what he'd be capable of doing an a top-caliber team.

Kind of like Barry Sanders... 😛
