Finished? I don't recall you even starting, but, at least you've done a great job at explaining why an old used piece of cloth should be burned and prayed to instead of thrown in the bin. I feel so enlightened. I wonder how many other people absolutely shocked at the idea can also explain why its so bad, or is it just bad because "it's against the code". Piece of cloth != God. Cloth in garbage != not being patriotic. Bowmaster's comment, which so many found repugnant for no real reason, hit the nail on the head.

It is meant to show respect for the thousands of men who died fighting for the freedom that you have today.

Well, you had a link to the code, but not a good reason anywhere why somebody in their own privacy can't just get rid of their old tattered flag as they see fit. Again, if you're ni your backyard doing whatever the heck it is that supposedly is honourable to this flag and nobody else knows if you're burning it, burying it, or throwing it, what's the big deal? Nobody else knows at that point, except for God if you believe in him, and in that case I'd be surprised if he cares. There's some minimal merit in disposing of it "properly" in the company of others, but if nobody else is around, who cares!

It's now a piece of old cloth. Bye bye.
At least he's treating the flag with the honor and respect it deserves, not like the other "foul weather" patriots who came out of the woodwork, mounted the flag on thier fricking CAR and haven't replaced it since. It's painful to see the amount of flags displayed improperly or that have been severely damaged and not replaced.

It irritates me to see the flag treated so disrespectfully, it is a living symbol of our country, and should be treated with reverance as dictated by the flag code.
It's a piece of freaking cloth. The intent behind displaying it, even if somebody isn't doing it "by the book" is entirely beside the point. Somebody displaying it in support of their country shouldn't be condemned because maybe its crease mark is a degree off from where it should be or it's not at the right height on their poll, etc. etc.

Thanks for your input and obvious lack of knowledge about the subject. You can kindly now refrain from further BS in this regard in the future.
So it's not just a piece of cloth? I didn't realize that the red on the flag was actually dyed with the blood of the forefathers. Forgive me.

I'm just sitting here, completely befuddled by the point you're making. I actually have nothing to say to you.

Astounding. Completely incomprehensible.
What exactly is incomprehensible? The fact that I find it a bit ludicrous to worship a piece of used cloth as if it's a deity? I mean seriously, Americans get so riled up over their little flag code (as evidenced by the "americans.. " comment and "oh americans" above). I'm not saying use the thing as an oil rag, but if it's an old flag throw that bad boy in the garbage and get a new one.
Many men have died for that symbol. Have some fvcking respect...

You know what, I'm a changed man! You just absolutely and utterly convinced me that I'm wrong about my patriotism towards my flag.

Thanks for making me see the light.

It's good to see some people change opinions every once in a while :)

Skoorb,

What you don't understand is that to Americans, the flag is an important symbol. Our national anthem is entirely about the inspiration of seeing that flag still flying after a long battle. It is a symbol of this country that especially to soldiers is very important. School children pledge allegiance to the flag (and to the republic for which it stands) every day. At most major public gatherings, the national anthem is played and all stand and face/salute the flag.

A symbol of this import deserves proper reverence.

Now excuse me, I have to go burn my stars and stripes underpants because my skid marks have defiled them...

OK, but it seems that people should be holding in reverence what the flag stands for, not the flag itself. When people get pissed at a tiny shortcoming in how somebody has their flag displayed, they're missing the entire point of what that person's display is indicative of.

Ah, but having a two year old flag that is tattered and faded doesn't show your respect. It is more of a statement that, "Look at me, I have a flag. Noone can contest my love for America."

Having a flag that you treat with respect and care is a far greater way to show your patriotism.

Well if patrotism is very important to you I guess you're right. :)

What are these stories about? I am imagining that Simpson's episode where the lemon tree gets stolen.

It's an informal memorial service, and the stories are usually related to a buddy who's no longer with us, lost to war or to daily life. Just memories. Never know who's going to be there or what's going to be told. Never doom and gloom, just good memories of days gone by.

The closes thing I could find was that generally you want to separate the blue field from the stripes and burn the stripes first. Some organizations also separate each individual stripe, but since I was handling so many flags that just wasn't feasible.

I remember this from boy scouts as well :)

Respect? On AT?

These pimple farmers think sacrifice is buying a slow CPU and overclocking it. They know nothing of selfless sacrifice for country, liberty, or honor.
