Yes. As opposed the the generic bandwagon patriot that doesn't take a few minutes to learn proper flag-handling protocol before displaying.

Leaving it out in the rain.
Leaving it out at night without illumination.
Allowing it to touch the ground.
Aging and tattered flags still flying for almost 3 years now.
Not disposing of it properly placing it in the trash.
Properly disposing of the flag as outlined by the thread starter.

No, it is NOT better to just be trying as is the argument sometimes. Learn why you're flying the flag, doing so improperly is more disrespectful than not at all.

Be careful. A lot of rednecks have no idea how to dispose of old flags and they get MIGHTY pissed seeing one burned. I speak from experience.

Not stay up all night.

I was at a Coast Guard station for the past month. They left theirs up at night with a spotlight on it.

unless properly lit.

Read the code.

"However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. "

For those too lazy to click a link and actually read the page.

* The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

(from the code)

We always went to the old stone quarry, a quiet, well groomed, private place on our property, built a fire out of the shafts that held the old flags, and burned them, one by one. All were quiet, as we watched the colors disipate into the air. Some stories, from the old timers, were told, and the kids instinctivly knew this was something that required their quiet attention.
Well, I'm in the city now. On 911 I took it upon myself to display the flag. I mounted it upon the peak of the house, put a light on it for night time illumination, and let it fly. I have noticed lately that the old flag is getting a bit tattered, so today the old flag is coming down and a new one is going up in its place.
The old and tattered flag will be properly folded and transported to that old stone quarry, to join the flags of our fallen soldiers.

TwoBills,

I appreciate and respect the history and tradition which you've shared. I purposely DID NOT fly an American Flag during the post 9/11 fashionable patriotic tide. Since the fair weather patriots have taken theirs down I proudly display mine, now the only house on the block to do so.

9/11 gave me an excuse to display our Flag without being labled a radical. I'm, also, the only one, on our block, left.

My idea of the proper disposal of an old flag involves lots of red, white and blue string bikinis for southern belles to wear at Myrtle Beach, but to each his own.

It's now a piece of old cloth. Bye bye.
At least he's treating the flag with the honor and respect it deserves, not like the other "foul weather" patriots who came out of the woodwork, mounted the flag on thier fricking CAR and haven't replaced it since. It's painful to see the amount of flags displayed improperly or that have been severely damaged and not replaced.

It irritates me to see the flag treated so disrespectfully, it is a living symbol of our country, and should be treated with reverance as dictated by the flag code.
It's a piece of freaking cloth. The intent behind displaying it, even if somebody isn't doing it "by the book" is entirely beside the point. Somebody displaying it in support of their country shouldn't be condemned because maybe its crease mark is a degree off from where it should be or it's not at the right height on their poll, etc. etc.

I guess I'm weird in that I think it's just a piece of colored cloth. If it's old just take it down and throw it away. I love this country but it's just a flag.

Thanks for your input and obvious lack of knowledge about the subject. You can kindly now refrain from further BS in this regard in the future.

So it's not just a piece of cloth? I didn't realize that the red on the flag was actually dyed with the blood of the forefathers. Forgive me.

I'm just sitting here, completely befuddled by the point you're making. I actually have nothing to say to you.

Astounding. Completely incomprehensible.

What exactly is incomprehensible? The fact that I find it a bit ludicrous to worship a piece of used cloth as if it's a deity? I mean seriously, Americans get so riled up over their little flag code (as evidenced by the "americans.. " comment and "oh americans" above). I'm not saying use the thing as an oil rag, but if it's an old flag throw that bad boy in the garbage and get a new one.

I'm finshed with you in this regard. I think you're just trolling since anyone that lives here cannot be this ignorant.
