BURGLARIZED... and we thought we were safe

There's only 4 hours in the entire day nobody is here. They must have known our schedule. Even area landscapers see us in and out every day. We live in the middle of suburbia on Long Island and this is one of the better towns. But we, along with 1 other house down the street were burglarized this afternoon. Only partial prints were made and taken. Lost are my uncle's brand new Dell Inspiron laptop and my digital camera, both totalled $2000. Also cash and some jewelry were missing. Strangely enough, a Palm Pilot and my XBOX sitting just as freely in the open, were not taken.

My little pomeranian was locked in the kitchen the whole time, where they entered with a crowbar to the sliding glass. They didn't harm him, at least. He's acting as if nothing even happened right now. Poor guy musta been scared s#!tless seeing people brake the glass and come in, having nowhere to run and hide. For those with big home-defense dogs, if he were a bigger dog, they might've even thought to whack him over the head with the crowbar. Not good.

Anyway, the point is, don't take your safety in your home for granted. The cop said a couple were bound and burglarized once around here also. This is considered a safe neighborhood! We didn't have an alarm system, but frankly, they would've made off with the laptop and camera within 3-5 minutes anyway. They were sitting in the open upstairs in my room. I think an alarm system with external sounds (so my neighbors, who are nosy, would hear) would be a lot better than getting cops here with a silent alarm. So I keep rambling - sorry about that... just be safe out there. Money is money and home-insurance claimable, but your well-being is more important.

Man that sucks, sorry to hear it happened.
There is not much you can do if someone wants to get into your house when your not around.
Defnitiely sounds like they had the house routine down. They may be in for a surprise one day
when they try to knock over the wrong house. Hopefully they will be caught sooner or later.

Sorry to hear. Hope insurance has you covered.

May I ask which neighborhood in Long Island this is?
I'm also close around the area and was concerned for the safety of my home and my family's.

Hehe, taking the Xbox would've hindered their escape because of the large size and weight 😛

It's a terrible feeling to be violated in that manner. I'm glad no one was hurt and that your doggie was ok.

We're right on the Nassau/Suffolk border and smack in the center (north/south-wise).

We've always left all the doors open with an unlocked screendoor during the middle of the day. Never thought twice about it. Backyard door (that they broke in through) was open all summer while we were upstairs doing our own thing during the day. It wouldn't be till around 10pm or so that someone shuts and locks it. Never thought twice about it.

I truly believe they found our routine (all 4 of us in the family follow strict schedules) and nailed us on it. They came about 30 minutes after my brother goes back to work after lunchbreak at home. Nobody gets home till 3-4 hours after that. So beware out there.

Don't know what the adjuster from the insurance company will say about the cash. Can't prove anything right? What do they do in those instances? Have a $500 deductible and we're covered up to ~$100k.

That's one great thing about living in Mayberry, Rockledge police dept. is maybe a mile away and when high winds set off my break glass sensor they were here in less than 2 min with guns drawn 😉 I'm very sorry to hear about your traumatic experience though and very glad they didn't hurt the pooch, the other stuff can be replaced...he cannot 🙂

I too live in Long Island (Nassau). Perhaps it's from growing up in Queens, but all doors are locked at pretty much all times in my household. I got a friend who, when he lived in Suffolk always had his sliding door open, and it just freaked me out that they would do such a thing. Thankfully nothing ever happened.

We came from Jamaica, Queens ourselves back in 1986. I guess we've taken our safety for granted here over the last 15 years.

That sucks bad.

Personally when I get a house I'm installing an alarm right away regardless of where I live. I've simply heard of too many people being burgalized because they didn't have them or never used them and I don't want to have to have it happen to me before I get one installed.

Damn theives :|

Sorry to hear about the robbery.
I've lived in western Suffolk all my life and we have never been robbed.
Never locked any doors either, but maybe we should start.

I never got it when people do not lock their residences. The thieves have cars too.

Everything is locked when nobody is home in our case. Before this incident, when I was home, I had nothing to fear. Doors open or unlocked. People would dare come into my home when there's 2 cars parked out front and 1 in the driveway? No way... they wouldn't. So I figure. No more taking chances from this point forth.

By the way, I forgot to mention my fiance's car has been parked at the side of the house (we live on a corner) and they still didn't fear coming in. They pretty much knew nobody was home. Again, goes back to the routine thing...

Heh, I keep checking EBAY for my missing items. People keep suggesting it was just some kid who did this for drug money. Brave enough to do this in broad daylight... this fool will pay. Oh yes, he will.

get a burglar alarm...you'll never regret it.

be careful..
a common trick burglar's use is to return to the same house a few months later after you have replaced stolen items with insurance money - and they rip you off again!

Burgler alarm?

Why do you need TWO forms of insurance? That's all a burgler alarm is, a form of insurance.

a girl i know's house got robbed every 3-4 months continually
eventually they found out it was her older brother breaking in to rip his parents off for drug money. he assumed it wasnt hurting anybody because the insurance always replaced everything.

ya.

in any case, sorry about your stuff, but its just stuff. glad you are safe 🙂

Dude, that sucks. Where do you live again? State, town, address...when did it happen, exactly? Are you gone at this time EVERY day? Your dog is usually locked up when you leave, right?

Excellent....

😉
