Some people want the latest in graphics, and they want it now, and they don't care how much it costs. Knock some sense into these people, and prices will fall.

It's supply and demand, baby!

i'm just gonna wait for crossfire and buy a x800 to go w/ my 850. screw the new sh!t, if i can buy an older cheaper card and pair it w/ my new card and be faster than the newest sh!t out... why pay 800+ for a new card?

they'll catch on... or we'll all be forced to take 2nd mortgages out on our houses to buy new computers.

Its too expensive for me to keep up really.

Im not seeing much point in upgrading much. Cost outweighs the increased benefit. I can game on my system and Im happy.

The simple lesson is that the ppl who want this stuff, dont need it. While Farcry or Doom3 may look better, I assure it plays teh exact same game on my computer still using a 9800. ppl dont pay $450,000 for a ferrari because it goes 10x faster, or is 10x more functional in any way than say a $45,000 M3 coupe. They buy it because you and i cant, and they want you and i to know it. I will buy a new card when I feel it is necessary to play a game mine cant, not when I next feel my package is undersized.

The cost is the reason I am still using a Radeon 9500 with 9700 soft hack.

Wont be buying a video card until the 6800Gt gets under 150.00

Why because there isnt a game out there that I cant play on the 9500. Doom 3 may not have all the eye candy but the game svcked anyway.

If I am going to spend 300.00 Im going to get an X-box 360. Even if its 400.00 its still a better deal than any video card I can buy for the same prices.

I can get a whole console system with graphics capable of beating next gen video cards and its still 100.00 less? Forget the video card industry I might just go console for gaming.

You know, why don't you guys head over to the Hot Deals forum, click on the Anandtech/Newegg thread, and check out the deals? There's a code that gets you over 100 dollars off that card, plus the rebates and you get an insane card for around 500 dollars. Sounds more like a deal to me.

Don't you mean the Hot Deals forum?
Still, $500 is a lot of money for a video card.
That's a lot of money for the average Joe.

Yeah that's what I meant 😛

I have no idea how that card performs, but remember there are people that are going to be spending over 600 bucks on the 7800...

Is it even possible with today's current PC hardware to play FarCry SMOOTH AS BUTTER with every setting high as possible at 1600x1200 Max AA/AF?

My rig is really good, but definetly can't do the above....and it really pisses me off. :|

Yes. Or damn close..

I can COMPLETELY max out HL2 and it runs fvcking awesome.. HL 2 is just written so well, even some sh!tty looking games can't be maxed and run the same way..

I do still want to upgrade my card just for the hell of it..

People complained when video cards were $300, yet they still bought them. Then they complained again when the average price increased to $400, yet they still bought them, same when they were $500...now that they are over $600, people are complaining once again, yet thousands and thousands of people will still pay for them.

The Government needs to deal with several things related to the computer industry.

Outlaw Spam & set limits on Junk mail
Significantly reduce the amount of porn sites.
Outlaw Spyware.
And place cap limits on retail products to prevent this type of gouging.

You're 75% right, anyway 😉

That's what I was thinking!

Im sorry but Doom3 and Far Cry are not 250.00 games. Meaning you need to buy a 200.00 video card just to play the game well. Thats BS. Thats possibly near the cost of the Xbox 360. Especially those 400+ video cards. I would much rather have an XBox 360 than a 400.00 video card that is slower than the xbox 360.

Pass on the upgrading. Video cards greatly exceed CPU prices its time to boycot video card upgrades.

HL2 is so darn smart. It scales back to Direct X7. So what if you dont get the water effect its not necessasary. At least everyone can play at good framerates. So what if I miss out on a few games I can wait and besides the game will be 10.00 by the time Im ready to buy it. Game companies should notice a large group are not buying games at first release any more simply because they dont have the hardware to drive it.

Game companies need to kick video card companies in the nuts on this problem.

I don't think that I agree with you necessarily that this is a "problem". There has always been a market for high end video cards, and I don't see why that would change now. I personally have no problem with spending $400 on a card that performs at least twice as well as a $200 card...

You can still play all the latest games with a 9700 Pro or 9800 Pro, both of which can be had for around the $100 mark if you look around. Obviously you can't turn up all the "eye-candy", but that's what you pay the $$$ for high-end cards for. For some people it's important, for others it's not. [Edit: Most of my friends still play HL2 and FarCry on stuff like Radeon 9600 Pro's, 8500's, GF4MX's, GF2/3, etc...]

You don't need a 6800 Ultra or X850XT to play Half-Life 2 or FarCry. 😉

I must be the other side of the spectrum. Budget Gamer. Or Blue Light Special Gamer.

Maybe its me but now I really dont mind waiting until that 400 video card costs 100.00 and as an added bonus that 50.00 video game is 10-15.00. Im just not buying into the need a 400.00 video card to play a game with full details garbage. I can wait. The loser is the game company that cant get someone like me to buy the game becuase I see it as a 450.00 game not just a 50.00 game. I dont feel I should suffer just because the video card company cant produce a quality budget video card any more. If I had the 400 to spend it would be on a complete system like the x-box 360 where I get a lot more for my money than just a video card that can produce water effects in the latest game making it really pretty.

But I guess there is enough that go that high end route.

I am just seeing a trend of more people passing instead. Its not like these guys dont have the cash they all pull 120K-150k they see it that same way I do. No game has been so great to cost them 450 to upgrade to play. Must less 650 for the top card. I guess I wont see you online until the video card price become reasonable but then you will have moved on and I will be about a generation of games behind. Granted you will have paid 650+ game to play it. I will pay 115+ to do the same just a year or more later. I have a lot more that I can do with that 500+ difference.

My Radeon 9500 is fine and Unreal 2004 is still a great game to me.

Maybe I am not as serious a gamer or just not a sucker for latest technology prices.

You know I guess what I am trying to say is if really good video cards dropped below 200 then more people would buy them and game companies would have a larger base for which to market their games. I suspect the 6800gt will be ther by years end. At least the game manufacturers should hope for that as game development has gone skyrockting into movie production price ranges. Game companies need consumers to have video cards that can handle their games otherwise people dont buy them and the game companies lose out because no one buys their games. Doom 3 might have been cutting egde but it limited its market and Im sure it made money but could have made a lot more if the video cards were cost effective. Activision should be angry with video card manufacturers because their Doom 3 engine is still a niche market because most people havent upgraded their radeon 8500, 9600, 9500, and Geforce 3, and 4's line. Limiting game development to Direct X 8 areas. This generation basically feels they arent upgrading any more. So the game companies will suffer for this because they move forward but peoples hardware isnt. If they wanted best bang for the buck they would go the HL2 route and allows DX7-9 to be able to play the game. For lost liscencing Doom3 Im sure it will look great but few will be playing. Limiting profits.
