$679.00

Thank god you get the additional $30 rebate :Q

512MB or not, the new cards better not debut at this price, it's outrageous.

It's just the point of them releasing graphics cards, ( FOR CONSUMERS ) @ $700..

Every year, cards prices have increased.. I'm sure the cost to nVidia and ATI has increased somewhat.. But steadily over the last 3-4 years, it seems GPU's have went up with every release..

I have no problem with paying a premium for the latest and greatest performance..

But $700 is just plain dumb.

Agreed..

I was really planning on selling my x850 and snagging a G70 for maybe 50-100 price difference, just to have an excuse to upgrade..

I may hold off though.. :p

Oddly, I bought my BFG 6800GT from Best Buy because it was CHEAPER than anywhere else, including Newegg! WTF was with that??

Supply vs Demand in a free market. If someone finds value in owning one at that price, they should be able to pay that price. If no one thinks that price is reasonable, they will not buy one.

Sometimes, the old e-penis does all of the thinking ;)

Video card pricing & CPU pricing has skyrocketed lately :( (i mean in the last couple years)

It's rather frustrating too, since people are spending $400 on a video card like it's normal, which of course lets the manufacturers know they can charge even more each recurring generation.

No. The demand is just growing and so is the market for games. Technology cost money.

Seems like the days are long gone that when they release a new video card it goes into the 200.00 price range and that card goes to the 130 area. Now they just release a new video card and ask for more money than the previous one. Then they claim that GPU's are much more than a CPU. BULL. if they were we would see GPU's replace CPU's.

It is BS especially since video cards are priced higher than most people mobo and cpu combo. But people are catching on and if anything the game companies are catching on. Ram prices have decreased and so should the price of video cards by now.

Seems game engines like HL2 work all the way back to Direct X 7. So you can still play the game and you are not forced to upgrade.

The problem is people are buying those super high end cards. Not only one but 2 because SLI is getting popular. Then if that wasnt enough ATI needs to release some competition to get a little price war going. I sure wish XGI and Matrox could make a decent card.

This is where things are really bad when there is no competition. Imagine a world with no AMD competing with Intel. Prices would be a nightmare because Intel could charge whatever it wants. Ouch.

it's obvious that the prices are skyrocketing, even look at the PS3 and Xbox360. They have like 3 CPUs and a G70/R520, yet they only cost near $300-400

this just goes to show that they are charging way more than the actual amount needed to research and develope a video card or cpu

Different game... consoles are designed to be cost efficient and they sell them at a loss and make money on the games.

yea, they sell them at a loss but just enough to cover the materials needed

even if they are selling it at a loss, it's obvious that they are charging much more than the intial development of the cards and cpus for desktop pcs

You probly bought it when the GT's were pretty new. B&M retailers generally only charge MSRP or slightly above; online retailers can generally charge whatever the fvck they want

EDIT
I bought one of the first GT's to come off the truck at my store last...May/June? Maybe early July? Something like that. IIRC, retail pricing was $399. Of course my $330 after tax was pretty damn nice for buying new technology as soon as it came out

Instead of worrying about the cost of high end cards why don't you compare what you got for $200-$300 last year to now.....

If somebody had a $300 budget they would be exceedingly happy with how things are progressing. AFAIK charging twice as much for a GPU that is twice as fast as last generation is much more acceptable than charging twice as much for a CPU that's only 10% better.

Ah, Best Buy and their high prices.

Who are they trying to fool?
It is automatically priced based on what they paid for it when they got it. I guess ATI wouldn't take them back, LOL

Yes, I think that qualifies as more ridiculous than the $1000 512MB 6800 Ultra.

The sad thing is, someone will probably buy a $500 9800 Pro and think it's WAY better than a <$200 6600GT.
