Painkiller sucked imho; as to whether it was worse than bulletstorm is up to personal opinion but you are comparing a bland game with a bland game. Personally I think there are better games; even on the cheap then either bulletstorm or painkiller.

Sorry to go slightly off topic, I loved Bulletstorm but never played Painkiller. Is it still worth getting today?
If so, is any specific version recommended? There seems to be about 6 of them, lol.
PainKiller and Battle Out of Hell are very good games that makes great use of Havok Physics. The best thing about these games is the *undocumented* weapons combos and the ability to unlock hidden areas and levels.

The two follow ups to the original game and expansion were lackluster in comparison.

So after reading apoppin opposing view of the game I decided to skim the 60 user reviews of painkiller and there seems to be a pattern; those who like boring repetitive game play loved the game. Those who wanted a bit more complexity hated it. Anyways imho farcry is a significantly better game if your looking for a cheap fps but who knows; maybe you should give this game a shot and tell us what you think (in a new thread :) )

Yes, repetitive. Like Bulletstorm, the Serious Sam series and Duke Nukem Forever. It's the level design and hordes of enemies plus the interesting and varied ways to dispatch them with over-the-top weapons with insane AltFire that makes this kind of shooter fun.

And most gamers never "got" PainKiller. There are SO many hidden areas that can be reached by the most precise jumping and use of Havok Physics. That and the undocumented weapons combos and unlockable levels on the harder difficulties.

And what is so great about Far Cry? The first half was fine .. then we get the ridiculous aliens and mutants coupled with the unbalanced AI with NPC snipers that can shoot you across the map; not to mention a really suck ending. Hopefully, Far Cry 3 will get it right but it looks to be a console port also.

In a world of repetitive FPS games, Pain Killer is anything but.

The nice aspect about far cry is that you can do the levels many different ways and take many different paths. Yea the ending kind of sucked; but many of the maps are a lot of fun if you want to approach them different ways. Most of different paths; many can be done via sneaking or frontal assalt or similar.
-
It's not the best FPS ever; and for those looking for puzzles or similar it lacks but the game play is solid and the varied path and assault methods allow for quite a bit of replay.
-
I guess some of it has to do with expectation and mood. I found serious sam 2 fun when it first came out but by the time serious sam hd came out it was a boring repititious game witha touch of humour and otherwise utterly repetitive (boring). I found painkiller significantly worse than serious sam and I only played through it once.
-
For this year crop of games bulletstorm was ok but not great; while I thought dead space 2 was great (but very short). I thought singularity was better than bulletstorm (though game play was probably not as good) but again very short. Naturally as we have seen in this thread repeatedly my view on the games for the most part does not match yours but i've never been a fan of unreal or doom/quake engine because they tend to lean towards boring games.

Serious Sam 2?
- that game was a parody of the First Encounter and the Second. And the HD (2010) versions were pure ports to the Serious 3 engine (but in DX9). i enjoyed playing them OVER - but this time in stereoscopic 3D.

i enjoyed Far Cry (and to a lesser extent Far Cry 2). But i recognize their faults. i like RPGs and hybrid RPGs like DeuSex and STALKER series but i play a wide variety of games and i even thought DNF was fun (for what it was - a mindless shooter in the Doom/Quake mold). Same thing with Bulletstorm even if the story was a distraction and there wasn't much variety besides the many ways to kill the enemies. i thought PainKiller was similar but with more *depth* - i played through to find all of the hidden areas an to unlock levels until i got to "Nightmare" difficulty - so Bulletstorm is actually dumbed-down a bit for me (although it looks good in 3D; graphics are improved but PainKiller actually looks pretty good in 3D; that old engine was pretty good).

Well it is from the same people. This time you are in hell or purgatory and have to make a deal with one of the angels to act as god's executioner.

You get to make a hit on the king of the demons. On the way you get to pass through a lot of varied levels that don't necessarily look like hell - the environments are great and the enemies are varied.

The bosses are HUGE and you have to figure how to kill them (like the giant man-eating plant in Bulletstorm - only bigger)

It's an old fashioned shooter with great weapons combos and hordes of demons to blast. It can be frustrating at times. Especially on Nightmare and Trauma difficulties. It's been years since i played the first two games.

Well - if you want to buy painkiller steam has the black edition (original/battle out of hell) for $10.
or amazon for the disk version for $8 and change;

and if you want it for (almost) free gog has it for $5.00.

I tried Painkiller and found it mind numbingly boring myself, I liked serious sam more.

i like the varied environments of painkiller. the melee weapon was pretty awesome too. i also liked the cheat code that slows down time, it was fun to launch a rocket and move behind the enemies to see it explode them from a distance as they reacted slowly.

the carnival and haunted house levels with the freaky kids were may favs. Of course the all the other PK's based from fan made mod communities sucked. I did like the story of Overdose and the half demon/angel guy but level design was not good.

Painkiller is fun, especially if you try to get the tarot cards, there are entire levels you have to do using a particular weapon or you have to find all the secret areas, or get all the souls, it really puts a hurt on the brain to find ways to some of them:D

I second the recommendation for Painkiller and BooH expansion, I only played Overdose after that and didn't get the same feeling, I dunno about the rest of them though.

I remember climbing to the top of a crane on a platform less than say 2 square meters, jumping back and forth on it just to build up speed to jump over to another crane about 12 feet away. I remember wanting to throw the monitor out the window several times. It's definitely an old school game, the levels were increasingly challenging, the bosses were darn tough, I can't think of any of the new games that really have that intensity.

But there are rewards for this also, you get secret levels if you get all the tarot cards, and entire different ending if you complete the campaign on all three difficulty levels and get all the cards.

I also liked Serious Sam a lot, especially the first one and the expansion that followed, but it's an entirely different type of game, it's a lot of fun for someone wanting to just shoot something

Painkiller has *insane* jumps. i remember moving a box to uncover a hidden platform that allowed you to hit the jumping pad at only *one* angle and velocity to get to the top of a really high tower. That lead to another *precise* jump down to another nearly impossible to get hidden place. And so many others. It is a game that if you like it, beckons you on for two replays - on Nightmare and Trauma - to get the "real" ending (which if i remember didn't match up with the expansion).

Here is great use of the Havok 2.0 engine:

This is long and will give you some idea of the game play.

Found it; here is the secret tower jump but it doesn't show the follow-up which is even harder to reach.

:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Of course, it is "People Can Fly" devs. Painkiller is a shooter but almost a platformer - with anytime save (thankfully). You can see where Bulletstorm has its roots and why i call it "dumbed down".

^ I remember using that very video for getting the card for the level. To my shame I didn't actually think I could reach there.

Painkiller looks great for a 2004 game in 3D Vision .. i am SO tempted to fire it back up again right now (and screw what i was planning for the rest of the day).

Bulletstorm
looks good in S3D too. The only issue i had was that the action is all over the place and sometimes it is a bit confusing. And triple the confusion in 3D Vision Surround where a lot is happening on the periphery - in 3D
o_O

My last comment here .. true, Bulletstorm makes no sense; an alcoholic renegade kills his entire crew except for his best buddy in a fit of insane rage then attempts redemption - neither did Painkiller, being dead and god's hitman and getting jerked around by the angel and all; another damn "redemption" theme. It's all about fun - shooting pixels.

Picked up Painkiller black edition for a dirt cheap price (Steam FTW). Enjoying it so far. If I had to describe it I would say it's like Serious Sam crossed with Quake1, although that may only be down to the 'Gothic' maps you start on.

Can't go wrong with a bit of trigger happy blasting fun :)

i haven't played any PK after the Battle Out of Hell expansion. However, the consensus appears to be that what was released after was 2nd rate and it is basically fan-made work that lacks the depth of the original two games.

The game was made for the teenage boy. That should be the end of your need to understand the story. As long as there is tits, guns, and cussing, it constitutes a good game to the target audience. If you want to pick apart a game for its story stick with the Metal Gear Solid series. They're console oriented games but oh man you can go all night with analyzing that nonsense.

Maybe, but this 42 year old is enjoying the hell out of it. Great Fun! How can someone NOT LOVE controlling a laser-firing dinosaur mech? That was pure awesome.

Plus, there's enough different scenarios and ways of killing baddies that it has yet to come close to being boring.

I'm loving this game.

I have yet to play a People Can Fly game that I didn't enjoy. Love them as much as Croteam.

I know this is an old thread, but I did not know whether to start a new thread or bump an old one. I searched the pc gaming section and this was the first thread I came across with bulletstorm in the title.

I bought Bulletstorm during the 2013 - 2014 holiday sale and I am really enjoying it.

The reports of foul language put me off buying the game, but when I saw it on sale for something like $4 I said why not. As a person who does not use foul language of any kind I was hesitant to buy bulletstorm. After putting 2 hours into the game, the language is more funny than offensive.

Having to log into a windows live account was a pain. Games for windows live is supposed to be going away. Plus, I could not hardly find any real instructions on how to create a games for windows live account.

Bulletstorm is more fun than I expected and I am glad I bought it.
