[building rig problem] will not boot. only gpu fan spins; overheating cpu; no sound

So I'm building a new rig. i just finished putting all the pieces together and the case fan and cpu fan, and the pc won't post but will turn on. when I turn on the pc it turns on but I can't turn it off, using the power button, unlike before the time i plugged in my hdd. I've pushed in the cpu plug as firmly as i can, anymore I feel i would be making a hole through the pc. I know it isn't the 24 pin connector or it would not turn on at all. Any suggestions on the problem? Thank you

GPU: sapphire r9 285 oc
RAM Ballistix 2X 4GB
HDD: WD blue 500GB
CPU amd fx 6300
PSU: Corsair CX600M

does it have on-board video..and please be a little more to the point pls just tell me which fans are running..oh at default the mobo if on-board vid ..will put out there first.. dont run it if the cpu fan is not spinning have you got it plugged in correctly as it can easily be reversed..on some boards the mobo will not run if no detect cpu fan spinning

as a note does/is your ram compatible with the chip u can look as the 6300 from mem can only handle 1600 if you go higher you can clck the ram back but look at getting it to post first..also did you have trouble putting the heatsink/fan assembly on to it u have to be careful with the amd chips..it may not have seated properly...

no i doesnt have onboard gpu, the gpu fan is the only fan spinning, case fans and cpu heatsink fan are not spinning. I have the cpu fan plugged into the cpufan pins

i have them all plugged in as there are no plugs beside the extra fan connectors left over. I'm sure gpu is getting power otherwise the fans on it wouldn't be spinning. Does it mean something if the pc refuses to turn off when I hold the power button b/c before I plugged in the hard drive I could turn it off with the power button.

ok unplug the hdd both power and sata..un pug your optical drive only have these items connected ..your mobo cpu/ram...and k-board and video card ..i am a little familiar with your components...will it run then...and screen of coarse..

ok no probs..also check you mobo wiring as in the power switch and rest switch the led`s and alike..if you have a led connected to the reset pins you may have a problem..atm just have the power switch connected...

So I got the pc to work, now there is another problem. Now I everything installed however, my speaker don't output any sound and the pc shuts down after I put load on it such as when I ran the windows 7 hardware assessment. 72C on cpu idle isn't normal is it? I'm looking it from the bios. So I think it might be the cpu. WHat do you think?

aside from running the stock cooler r u over clocking it.. if so well it may wel be normal..but if u have a aftermarket cooler ...did you peel the plastic off the bottom of the surface that mates to the cpu...your pc-speaker or out put from the jacks at the rear of the mobo going to an amp of some description..ok cool but i need to know what cooler uou r running..and the cooler only goes one way with the arm that secures it ..it should be in towards the centre of the mobo side..um i got to jett for about an hour.. i need the band with that i am using to keep the page up...i`ll be back...try get the cpu at around 40 degreese in your bios..or 35 would be better...

My god.so many problems with this built.for the temp.did you notice any thermal paste before installing the heatsink.

72C is way to hot for an AMD CPU, even at full load. Is the Asus software giving you that number, or are you seeing it somewhere else?

If that number is correct:
You will probably want to get some thermal interface material.
First make sure the heatsink is making good contact with the CPU. If it is, take the CPU heatsink off and see if there is thermal material on the top of the CPU and the bottom of the heatsink.
You may just need to scrape off the old material from both surfaces, and apply a thin layer to the top of the CPU.

i believe i was put on this planet too make a difference..and a kind thank you from those who appreciate..makes it worth it all.. so thank you and the guys from the forum..it`s been a hectic festive season from down under...

with your on-board sound not working..first check it in the bios..then check the device manager is there a fault listed in there or is it disabled..with a simple fix/cure if you in fact have no joy with the on bord ..disable it in the bios and fit a sound card..may be an easy fix for the time being..as for having the latest drivers for the on board..you may want to get the latest ones uninstall the old ones and install the new ones....failing this a sound card may be your only option aside from mobo replacement...

there is heatsink compound ..and there is heatsink compound..recently me and a mate researched this to a very great deal..on average the 5$ compound is good for a year after the 20$ mark for a tube of heat compound we found little difference ..a good rule find out the compound`s life before buying the compound....ohh another point..if the heatsink it`s self is about one inch tall and a pretty much solid block of alloy with fin`s round the edges..get rid of it it`s not worth its weight in scrap..metal..if u over clock at all i suspect that this is y your temps are above average...even at stock speed ...

yep you pretty much described the heatsink. it pretty much looks like this image below

and they supplied that with a 6300 cpu is that correct..well my freind.. toss it in to the basket that says...in dire emergency`s....get a real cooler i think that will solve all your problems...well heat problems ..dont over clock with that cooler..pls..um ok it`s 35-40 deg C here today i have not seen my core temp over 30C..

sugest a sideon 120 cooler master it fits onto a 120 mm fan..there not expensive but you can over clock with them... i have one on both my units...there not hard to fit and pretty straight foward...i find that some of the air collers .... put way to much pressure on the pcb circuit boards...

it does not sound too good..you may have fried the cpu..and this is a maybe.....can you take the cpu to a store and have it tested..my thinking...

a note on thermal compound some is conductive and some are not if its plain white..it prolly isn`t..if its gold yep or silver even gray..the grey is just that ...the gray area..maybe.. maybe not ...here is the thing if you have got the compound on any of the cpu pins..take out cpu carefully AMD pins bend very easy..get some spray cleaner in a pressure pack..making shore there is no compound on the cpu pins..have we been here...
