What's best CPU in term of performance/price given a modest overclock? It need to be faster than my i7-950 at 4.2Ghz.

In terms of raw frequency for price, the FX-4300 can shoot way over 4.2 as long as you've got the cooler for it. I think Newegg has a promo code on it too right now. Whatever you do, if you're buying AMD, buy Vishera. Do NOT buy the Zambezi series processors. Their numbers seem similar, but the architecture is just a whole different ball game.

@ OP: i7 3930K. If you don't need that much power, then i7 3770K.

are you saying the i7-950 at 4.2Ghz, isn't much less than a i7-3930k and/or i7 3770k?

That said, a 3770K seems like the logical upgrade choice to me, though I'd be waiting for Haswell at this point.

Edit: Especially because completely unfounded rumors are pointing to it having OC magic.

If you don't need 6 cores then I'd wait to see what haswell's OC potential is...as your current cpu is no slouch at 4.2GHz.

but the 4770K is so close to being released that you should probably wait a little bit more,
or if you really can take advantage from 6 cores, just go with the 3930K (and is not to concerned about power usage, with 4.2GHz it's probably the case)

I wouldn't say "top dog," but CPU improvements are much more incremental than before, especially on the Intel side. Even a 5 year old CPU can be called "competent" for basic day-to-day tasks even if it's not the fastest any more.

Initially I thought that my CPU is getting old, so surely after 2 years the speed increase would be a lot with an upgrade. Now, I get the feeling that an upgrade is pointless at this time given the slow progress of x64 speed.

Ah I see you were talking about your 950 not the 3770K... try 4 years then.

Since you are upgrading from a Core i7 9xx I would say 3770k but I would rather wait for Haswell at this stage.

I upgraded from a 965 to a i7 3770. Bottom line, night and day difference. Still wait for the 4770K, no reason not to, even if Haswell is only incrementally faster than Ivy Bridge, its nearly right around the corner.
