Building a new pc , is it worth going to SSD or should i stick with SATA

The difference between an HD, and an SSD, is the same as the difference between a 10 year old 800 Mhz PII laptop, and an overclocked 3.6 Ghz dual-core desktop. Are you still running a vacuum-tube computer every day, when you could have a Cray supercomputer?

and how much were 7200rpm drives when you bought the raptor?
if you spent more for the raptor than the going rate at the time for "regular" drives, then you are contradicting yourself.

It's moot because there was no such thing as SSD when I got this. PLUS, I wasn't going to spend $300+ for it at retail. If I didn't get the $150 deal I would NOT, repeat NOT NOT NOT NOT! Do you get it!? NOT have bought it.

That doesn't change the fact that you paid more for the raptor than for a 7200rpm drive.

Even at 150$ it was quite a bit more expensive $/gb wise than the normal drives, so his point is valid..
 
On a desktop maybe think about it (personally I'm all for SSD on anything right now).

On a laptop, you know storage is the bottleneck. This is like getting better than Raptor speeds on a laptop. 2 years ago that was unthinkable (unless you dared to put your raptor in a laptop and live with 15 minute battery life).

Anyway, having a laptop with no moving parts and fast, fast, fast storage access has been great.

In other words "if you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."

Well it does help with web browsing speed and definitely multitasking. If you ever ran your tcp/ip stack and browser cache folder off a ramdrive that is about how much it helps speed up your web browsing. It is pretty cool. That is just a extra bonus for me I didn't get a SSD just for that. Got it for better multitasking mainly.

Wow I've run browser cache on RAM disk but how do you run the TCP/IP stack on RAM Disk? Sounds like a cool thing to try.

Last time I did it was well over 2 to 3 years ago should be able to find it on google. Last time I did it I couldn't get it to work 🙁 May be because I tried it on Vista. Last time I had it working was on Windows 2000 and XP. Not sure if you can do it fine in Vista and 7. Never tried it on a 64 bit OS easier. More simple to just have my SSD. Sense it basically does the same thing without all the hassle.

Yeah I agree about the SSD taking the hassle out of good performance.

As what most have said if you have the funds to get one or several then go for it. right now too pricey, but in the future that will change.

Would it give greater performance gains to buy more ram instead of getting a SSD? Stuff like my web browser has no load time since I never close it; I leave Opera running 24 hours per day. If I'm working on something like AutoCAD, it starts up at the beginning of the day and it stays open until I'm finished using it which could easily be 10 hours later.

Games seems like a pointless argument. I made a video a while back to show the load time for Fallout 3 when using a "green" 5400rpm drive. less than 20 seconds from desktop to shooting monsters

Maybe if you spell the damn name right I'll consider what you said a priority.

Further it does NOT matter in the least whether I've used one or not. Why? Because looking at the price I will never, I repeat NEVER buy one at the current prices. So using one and seeing what it does means jack.

This has been my point all along, the price is too high so I recommend wait it out. If you're rich then go ahead, I don't bitch at people driving a Porsche instead of a Camaro. Don't get your panties in a wad over MY decision and MY recommendation. I'm not holding a gun to your head in this decision.

No it's not valid, not in the slightest. The $300+ price was out of my budget for a simple HDD, way out. $150 was feasable considering it was almost half the retail price at the time.

If an SSD was $150 for a decent one that had TRIM and wasn't less than 160GB then I would also buy one. However, that is not the case.

Is it too hard to understand that some of us actually have a budget for PC gear and don't have a blank check so to speak? I think so...

Why: Boot time faster, shut down faster, windows updates faster, games load faster......
 
I dont CARE if it gets me places faster, my budget wont HANDLE a car!

Haha. So true Emulex. I've stared at the HD light while thinking to myself, "Why am I watching the HD light like an idiot?" 🙂

That aside, what about other reasons why one should get a SSD?

For me, it was a no brainer upgrade. I travel constantly with my laptop and at the office it goes to several meetings a day. I’ve had couple of HDs fails (I’m sure I contributed to their demise) and I knew I had to move to SSD for its durability. I forked out my own money (Kingston 40g) and it’s been working great.

One thing I love is the fast OS resume which is perfect when you are running from meeting to meeting. This benefit alone was worth it for me. Don’t have to run around with the lid open or set the power management to sub-optimal settings so the lappy doesn’t go into sleep/hibernate.

I guess SSDs are like flat screen TVs: If you have the money, it’s a no brainer buy, and you can show it off to your friends. 🙂

You do realize that fast resume and hard drive are completely unrelated, right?
