Hey all,

For my work, I run some windows 98 software that for various reasons, will only run in win98. I'm tired of keeping around a bunch of old towers, so I'd like to convert all of those machines into virtual ones. I transferred them all successfully, but vmware runs like a dog on my old P4 machine, so it's time to upgrade, I think.

I also thought it'd be a fun project to build this computer.

So, following the guidelines for advice-asking:

1. I'd like to run Vmware as fast as possible, in addition to doing office-type tasks.

2. I can spend $2000 to $3000 on this PC.

3. I will be buying parts in the US.

4. No brand preferences.

5. I'm bringing a monitor and kb/m, but nothing else.

6. I've not seen any threads regarding this particular issue.

7. I want to try overclocking, but it is not a must.

Thanks a lot

You don't need to spend that much for vmware machine. The things that I've noticed, which help in speeding up vmware, is vmware applications on separate drive and a good amount of memory. A faster cpu would help, but memory and harddrive helps more.

Perhaps a duo core or quad core, at least 2GB of ram, 2 harddrives (OS and etc on 1, and vmware and other less used stuff on the other), and the rest you can pick.. :)
