OK Ilike the SFF idea, but I find very few with onboard video (which isn't a requirement, but a cost savings measure) for less than $400. I COULD go with an old Socket A setup, but again that limits the lifespan of the computer.

No one has commented on the parts in my wishlist. I know the system is a little more than she NEEDS right now, but that's the best way to build it IMO. She has said she has $1000 to spend on it, so I thought I would do the best she can get for the $$ and still leave an upgrade path (which I don't really get with Dell). The wishlist I have was fairly hastily put together and I plan to get components from Newegg and other places...it's just convenient to create a wishlist at newegg.

If you don't like my component choices, give me some alternatives. Mind you, I haven't ruled out Dell or emachines, I just think leaving an upgrade path is important for anyone.

Can anyone suggest a S939 mobo with onboard video that won't cost me more than $100?

There are a ton of socket 939 motherboards that fit you requirements. This ASUS Fits in to a small form factor case like these

I know they make mini atx cases that allow for full sized PSU's, but I cannot remember where or who makes and sells them.

Thanks Googer for the replies...nice stuff, but expensive. The mobo is almost $200 alone. I do like the looks of those ASUS motherboards though...my search on newegg didn't turn those up. Thanks

What do you mean? Both are less than $90. The Asus with nVIDIA 6150 is $88 and the 6100 is $76.50

If she has a 1000 dollar budget why not spend like 200 on that 19inch lcd monitor on tiger and like 35 bucks for the z-530s. Also why not go 754 instead of 939, you can get a 3700 for pretty cheap

Damn straight. Some other ideas: Go SFF, she'll think the small size is cute (like a Mac Mini) , go for a wireless mouse/keyboard combo, download ITunes, get a cheap but flashy set of speakers, and set the homepage to cosmomag.com or some crap.

Brilliant!!!

Why can't I think of stuff like this???

Wow this guy nailed it.

lol, good sh!t

throw in a skillet and a vacuum, and thats an offer that no good girl can refuse.

I might disagree with the speakers, that is overkill for someone who just wants to do office work. Some $10 speakers will do just fine. But if it is in the budget then go for it.

Socket 754 is a great way to go for someone like her, but I think he wants an upgrade path to possible dual core cpu's (it will be neede to power all that spyware she will be running). Eitherone is fine, the price differance these days between 939 and 754 is shrinking.

I see, you were talking about The Pentium M motherboad (laptop CPU). I can find something else for less. If you want to take the mobile route (not a bad Idea) then Turion 64 from AMD in desktop socket 754 would be a nice cheaper alternative. And ASUS is one of the few manufacturers that support mobile 754 in a desktop board.

Intel Mobile Pentium M CPU SFF Kits
Probably a Bit too much money but this includes a PSU, motherboard, and video. Just add ram, mobile cpu, os and hdd. So maybe it is not a bad deal after all?

Second pick. This one looks good but I am not sure about the IO expansion. It appears like it uses hard to find half height pci back plate brackets.

Complete list.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi...axPrice=&SubCategory=3&Submit=Property

AMD Mobile CPU SFF Kits and CPU's
Hot deal- $116 Case, ASUS 754 Motherboard, Standard Size PSU, Heatsink, Fans, and all ready to go- Just ADD CPU, RAM, Optical, HDD, and OS (linux/Windows)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16856110033

AMD 754 Mobile CPU's- Check for heat sink compatabiliy. I think the one included with the ASUS Case above will work.

Monitor Suggestion- Built in speaker keeps things clean, neat, and cheaper

$499- Athlon 64 3400+, 512MB RAM, 200GB Hard Drive, and ATI Graphics- Full Factory Warrenty <-- Socket 754?

The CPU and Hard Drive are almost half the cost of one of these machines! Awesome deal for someone who will just be using it for simple tasks like Internet and Quicken. Plus with the warrenty she will not be calling you at 3am when her mouse will not turn on becasue she cannot find it's on off switch.

Man, when the hell did eMachines start producing systems with good specs?

I say install a secret webcam in the monitor, and suggest to her that computers work the best inside shower stalls.
