NOT a gamer. She is just going to use it to run Quicken, work with digital photos and browse the internet. She's pretty hot, so I wanna do this right...dunno why...must...please...pretty...girl....

Not sure about the mobo...looking for a socket 939 with onboard graphics...what do you think about the Biostar?

She could buy a similar Dell for about a hundred $ less, but there is no upgrade path there. This way she can upgrade the CPU, put in more memory and/or put in a video card.

All from Newegg:

why go for today's generation hardware for something as simple as that? You can do all that with my NF7-S v2 nforce 2 board.

Just get the Dell. I'm sure she'll be much happier with $100 than an upgrade path she'll likely never use. If she doesn't game, she'll never need a new video card, and memory is always upgradable using larger DIMMS.

Yes, but most people who get a computer wish shortly after they had spent a little more to get a more powerful machine. Why would she invest in a dead end computer? I mean, I know she won't be able to upgrade the homebuilt forever, but in 2-3 years, drop another $100 and get a whole new lease on life.

Besides, I get to go see her to erect it.

The Best Suggestion:

Why use ALL the money on the hardware when the chances are that your "sexy" sister would probably never know about. What they admire most would be a FLASHY case with a ton of LEDs and a kick ass LCD monitor.

Damn straight. Some other ideas: Go SFF, she'll think the small size is cute (like a Mac Mini) , go for a wireless mouse/keyboard combo, download ITunes, get a cheap but flashy set of speakers, and set the homepage to cosmomag.com or some crap.

For the money, you cannot beat this with a stick-
$599- Athlon 64 3500+, 1024MB RAM, 200GB hard drive, and ATI Graphics- Full Factory Warrenty <-- Socket 939?
$499- Athlon 64 3400+, 512MB RAM, 200GB Hard Drive, and ATI Graphics- Full Factory Warrenty <-- Socket 754?

The CPU and Hard Drive are almost half the cost of one of these machines! Awesome deal for someone who will just be using it for simple tasks like Internet and Quicken. Plus with the warrenty she will not be calling you at 3am when her mouse will not turn on becasue she cannot find it's on off switch.

Man, when the hell did eMachines start producing systems with good specs?

Whatever you do, make sure you install something new and buggy like Win XP 64. Every time you email her attach some spyware, so you'll have to be there all the time to "work on her box."

That, and hijack her webcam. You are making sure she has a webcam, right?

Wow, this is pathetic...You're pathetic.

We're even more pathetic for cheering you on.

I'd just get a dell with a reasonable proc, check for "free double memory" which seems to be on offer half of the time, a ATI hypermemory card (mind this uses system ram tho) and a decent TFT. Alternatively a SFF - but a reasonably stylish one (personally i dont consider mass LED's stylish), and one that looks good build quality, not plasticy and noisy.

when you say quicken, you mean for personal finances / own small business, or does she do bookeeping?

Small business...

I thot about an SFF, but which would you suggest? I do like the idea of one of those emachines tho...tho once I add the monitor, the price is about the same as home built, but with faster processor.

And don't worry, I'm staying away...just like to be around a pretty woman, ya know?

I dont know who the hell thinks a billion flashy LED's is actually cool.

I'd probably get a Shuttle SFF with built in video (but with a PCI-E slot) and an LCD with DVI connector (Dell 1905FP?).

No LED or case lights...this is an adult person. In fact, no case window either.

OK Ilike the SFF idea, but I find very few with onboard video (which isn't a requirement, but a cost savings measure) for less than $400. I COULD go with an old Socket A setup, but again that limits the lifespan of the computer.

No one has commented on the parts in my wishlist. I know the system is a little more than she NEEDS right now, but that's the best way to build it IMO. She has said she has $1000 to spend on it, so I thought I would do the best she can get for the $$ and still leave an upgrade path (which I don't really get with Dell). The wishlist I have was fairly hastily put together and I plan to get components from Newegg and other places...it's just convenient to create a wishlist at newegg.

If you don't like my component choices, give me some alternatives. Mind you, I haven't ruled out Dell or emachines, I just think leaving an upgrade path is important for anyone.

Can anyone suggest a S939 mobo with onboard video that won't cost me more than $100?
