come again, in a month or two.

i was going to say that.

It might be overkill for 1280x1024, but if you're spending the same or only $80 more, then why not go fot it?

to be honest, i don't think i need another video card. sli/crossfire do not make any huge difference from single card but maybe a slight difference. so why should i bawl more money to spend on another card?

edit: and yes, it'll be an overkill for my 17" lcd monitor which its resolution is maxed at 1280x1024.

the bolded statement is completely false. sli/crossfire usually gives you a ~90% increase in your frame rate over a single of the same type. at 1280x1024 this would not matter, but at 1920x1440 or higgher it would, so sli/crossfire does matter, not that i would buy it unless i was running those resolutions with all the eye candy on.....

I agree about the statement being false. However, if the OP is going to buy an SLI mobo and spend $480 on a 7900GTX, would it be better to spend the exact same amount for two 7900GTs?

Personally, if I were going to game at 1280x1024, I would buy one 7900GT and pocket the $240 or put it towards something else (like a larger LCD maybe?).

when i build this newly am2 rig, i'm going to save money for a bigger monitor, perhaps a 20.1".

gl with your build. its nice how you block out ati cards as they give the best image quality without much loss in frame rate as nvidia frame rates drop to VERY low numbers when turning on aa&af. OP is also an intel hater. i bet he wont be saying that in 2 months with his outdated machine lol. P-D offers better bang for buck right now over x2's.
oh and thats a horrible psu in your OP also. gl with it

if going to buy 1 gpu and spend $480 then get a 7900gtx, and have an updgrade route when you get your 20" 1600x1200 or 1680x1050 lcd. not that you will need it for some time though... than again sli is kind of a double edge sword, because when you need to add another gpu 2x the old ones are usually less powerful than 1x the new one especially when you are in the high and extremely high end gpus...
