don't worry about a aftermarket hsf if you are not o/cing, the stock one will be just fine. also, go a x1900xt as it will be cheaper than 2x7900gts and also 1x7900gtx. 3800->4400? well the 4400 is the same speed as the 4200 except it has more cache, which you probably will not notice, so i would just get a 3800 and save some $$$$

don't be brand loyal, get what gives you the best bang for buck

OP, I think you aught to look at exactly how much $$ you are throwing into just OC'ing that cpu (expensive motherboard, PSU, memory, aftermarket fans, etc). Gaming performance comes from the video card much more so than cpu.

More or less agree with bamacre, except no need for two hard drives in this case, especially when they're the same speed.

The 3800+ is going to beat the pentium 940 for gaming, (as would a 3000+), but the 3800 is $70 more ATM than the 940. AM2 3800+ could come down around $200 or even less in a month according to the buzz.

Dual 7900GTX cards in SLI would be an insanely good setup, but if you're running 1280x1024 it's a waste and you wouldn't notice much difference over a single card AFAIK. Plus you wouldn't be able to max out oblivion with either setup...

Oh, I didn't see what resolution he was gaming at. I assumed since he was spending $2K on a gaming system, he'd have a better monitor. Don't know what I was thinking.

Aren't two 7900GTs faster than one 7900GTX? The 7900GT is $240 shipped AR right now. Two of them are the same price as the 7900GTX. You might have to get someone else to order the second 7900GT in order to qualify for two mail-in rebates. Or you could spend a little bit more and get the 7950GX2 for $560 shipped.

It might be overkill for 1280x1024, but if you're spending the same or only $80 more, then why not go fot it?

to be honest, i don't think i need another video card. sli/crossfire do not make any huge difference from single card but maybe a slight difference. so why should i bawl more money to spend on another card?

edit: and yes, it'll be an overkill for my 17" lcd monitor which its resolution is maxed at 1280x1024.
