Howard is the AT resident culinary guru.
Sorry, I only eat the rice that alkemyst grows. Nothing else is good enough, and hence, plain white rice is beyond my ken.

;)

Also, you give me waaaay too much credit.

Why do you keep buying in such quantities if you're just going to ignore and then chuck it eventually? Buy smaller.

Even if I eat 1/4 of it, it is still cheaper than bulk Jasmine at Whole FOods or little bags of it from the grocery store.

I am. I just wanted to know if it was weird that I was ignoring the bugs. I also figured they were normal in most parts of the world for most of civilization. :)

I live in the midwest and have never seen bugs in rice that was stored properly. Maybe down south where they got fire ants and killer bees they deal with it, but not here.

Well, at least weigh in on to eat it or not. :)

Maybe if it said Thai hom mali. I think parts of the US grow jasmine rice (probably other places too).

Yep.
I always look for Thai hom mali on the bag before I buy it so I know it is top quality jasmine. You also have to check to see if it is ALL Jasmine or a blend. None of the "American" versions are nearly as good IMHO, and they cost substantially more$$.

And they don't come with all those bugs.

Um, there is no guarantee though. Small bags are always a safe bet. Technically, white rice can be stored for a long time.. spanning years, but you need to make sure there is no air or any moisture present in the bag.

Good luck finding no bugs in the rice. If you leave the rice long enough, you'll find the bugs hatching from the rice. Soak your rice with a couple rinses of water and the bugs will float so you can then scoop them out.

Yep, we had this problem last year. They pretty much infest to other areas: baking flour and corns. Keep everything sealed and you'll be ok. To get rid of 'em, spread a thin layer of rice on a large tray and keep it under the sun or throw it away altogether D:

You guys are fucked up. OP needs to throw that shit out.

Asked the SO's opinion on the matter, and she started in on the, "Well, when I was a kid..." and I cut her off with, "Would you feed that to your babies?"

"No."

Put the rice outside for the birds and small animals to get at it.

Then get another bag; And handle it better.

I have a 25 pound bag of Jasmine rice, and I just notice bugs in it: ...... They look about like that.
wtf?
Did they come in the rice and hatch recently?
Does it matter?
Will they infect other food?

The rice might've been infected with weevil larvae which grows inside the rice kernel so they hatched after a while. The usual thing to do is to freeze rice that you just bought for at least 3 days/nights (separate into smaller bags if the freezer can't fit the entire bag) which would kill the existing adult weevils and larvae. Then store the rice in some airtight container so that outside weevils can't get to it. In your case freeze the rice that you have, which would kill the weevils and then wash the rice more thoroughly before cooking to remove the weevils, they tend to float to the top.

don't forget to look for little red medals attached to the bag :awe:

i don't think i've ever seen that many bugs in rice unless it's been left out for over a year.

as long as the asian market is busy i wouldn't have a problem shopping there if it's dirty. heh i think most of the markets around here would be closed by the health department if they were inspected.

Sometimes I get one or two in a 25 lb bag but the brand I buy is pretty good about it. Never seen that many before in rice, but I've seen that in flour. Just chuck it and seal it better next time.

All food has bugs. You're just seeing it with this batch. I'd separate it, and freeze it. You may be able to come up with a clever method of removing the bugs, but I wouldn't worry about it. Cook it up, and think happy thoughts. Visible bugs aren't any worse than invisible bugs.

I've been thinking about 'gettin sum, but I know nothing about rice.

http://www.amazon.com/Super-Lucky-El...=thai+hom+mali

that look okay?

I live in NYC, though. More specifically in Queens where the Asians outnumber me here as much as they would in Honk Kong so maybe there are some places around here that I can go grab a bag or two? Any suggestions on what brands to look for would be great :)
