Jasmine rice.. that must be from Thailand.

When we were in thailand, one of our bus stops was at a field with people picking rice. The bus was also full of people like me with stomach issues during various times of the trip. ;)

that look okay?

I live in NYC, though. More specifically in Queens where the Asians outnumber me here as much as they would in Honk Kong so maybe there are some places around here that I can go grab a bag or two? Any suggestions on what brands to look for would be great :)

There are so many different brands out there.

Jasmine is a type that we have used for 20+ years.
As long as the brand says JAsmine; we have no problem with the couintry of origin

1. Put the rice in the freezer to kill them off so they don't breed anymore.

2. When preparing the rice rinse thoroughly. You'll see the bugs float to the top and are easily poured off. Rinse and repeat until no further bugs are present.

OK, I threw out the rice and the open bags of flour in my house. Hopefully that will keep everything else from becoming infected. I was not worried about the rice so much, because, as many have said, it is pretty easy to rinse the rice, and it all gets boiled anyway. I merely want to prevent a whole house infestation!

And, did you wipe down the shelves with bleach water? Store your dry goods in sealed containers and don't leave them in the bag. The biggest aid is to buy in smaller quantities so the product doesn't sit on the shelf for months.

#384 on the list of things you should know before leaving home. ;)

Whatever you do, don't donate it to your local food bank - this happens a lot in my local food bank. It messes up the storage area, and it's a stupid thing to do to people who depend on food donations. In my area there are a lot of people who don't believe that people who get donated food should have anything any good. Hope your area doesn't have this problem.

I don't get any food donations - I'm diabetic and donated food is largely carbs. But I do volunteer at the local center.

Nishiki is always good. It's not long grain though. If you're in queens you can also just make a trip to flushing and pick up a bag of nishiki. Never had any problems with them and main street is littered with supermarkets.

my brother is in coast guard... all non-rates have to work in kitchen eventually. he was telling me that all their flour and rice stores are infested with weevils, and they do nothing about it. just cook the bugs along with everything else.

The bugs that are visible are easy to discard, but their larvae blend in with the rice. They are similar in color, shape and size to the grains.. so they are virtually impossible to get rid off.

If you are fine with eating the rice with larvae.. they just get rid of the bugs and act like nothing happened. I think I may have eaten tons of larvae in my life.. I never noticed them if cooked properly.

Im weird. If I dont know or see them Im fine but once I notice I get disgusted and have to throw it away. Its the same with fruit and mold for me. I could just cut the moldy part off but I get grossed out.
