I have a 25 pound bag of Jasmine rice, and I just notice bugs in it:

They look about like that.
wtf?
Did they come in the rice and hatch recently?
Does it matter?
Will they infect other food?

Mmm, protein.

And, yes, they came in the rice. And, yes, they will spread to other dry foods if left accessible.

The bugs that are visible are easy to discard, but their larvae blend in with the rice. They are similar in color, shape and size to the grains.. so they are virtually impossible to get rid off.

If you are fine with eating the rice with larvae.. they just get rid of the bugs and act like nothing happened. I think I may have eaten tons of larvae in my life.. I never noticed them if cooked properly.

What about prevention next time? Are they in the rice from the start?
I can wash off a few bug, but sooner or later they will multiply so much I will get totally grossed out.

Buy smaller bags or use vacuum sealers.

As Drebo said, they come in the rice and they will spread to other dry goods like flour, cornmeal, cereal, pasta etc. Throw it out, use heavy plastic, metal or, glass containers. Wipe down your shelves with bleach water and, don't buy in such large quantities no matter how 'good' the price is.

The Chef has spoken.
So, let it be written.
So, let it be done.

I think we salt our rice so that doesn't happen. And then rinse it when we use it. If you rinse it the bugs rise to the top I think.

Are you really considering keeping it? Rice is one of the cheapest foods that you can buy, chuck it and get some more.

Wouldn't tupperware be better?

Tupperware meets the definition of "heavy plastic" so, yes. The qualification is there so, you just don't dump the dry goods into ziplock bags. Now, do what I said and stop posting about it.

Freeze the bag next time. Kills all the bugs/larvae so they don't hatch if don't finish the rice in time. I heard this happens in all manufactured since they leave the rice out to dry during the production.

Nasty! Put water in it, freeze it, and discard the resulting block of ice on the morning of garbage day. That's some nasty stuff right there.

i would also look at disinfecting the cupboard it was in, the act of moving everything will also confirm that the bugs did not get out and spread to other food.

I don't mind throwing it away. It was cheap. The expense is the drive to the asian store and back with a 25 pound bag. BTW, this is the bag I bought when I saw teh mouse/rat behind the pallets of rice.

Why do you keep buying in such quantities if you're just going to ignore and then chuck it eventually? Buy smaller.
