Budget Video Card: Radeon 7500 or GeForce2 Ti

oh crap sorry, I just reliezed that the site I was reading was old... what are the new cheap(budget) cards ont he market

I hope you are joking about "upgrading" your graphics card from a K6 and 128 megs of ram system. You can't even run mine sweeper with 128 megs of ram on Windows XP ... lol

Seriously though you can get a prebuilt system light years ahead of yours for probably $350. That's less than 1.5 weeks of work at $6 an hour. If you cant save $350 maybe you should reconsider where you are going with your life and not worry about videocards 🙂

If you live near a Fry's Electronics, they often run specials on entry level vid cards that are free after a mail in rebate. For example, I posted this thread on our Hot Deals forum for a EVGA FX5200 128 MB AGP Vid card for $40 - $40 MIR = $0.

From the cards you gave as examples, I'd guess you were looking for an AGP card. This card is an nVidia AGP card, and it's way ahead of the gForce 2 you gave as an example. They also run similar specials for PCI-e cards, now and then.

Here's the entry page for their regular ad. Their ad cycle runs from Friday - Tuesday with new pages added each day. They have a different set of ads that run Wednesday - Thursday. Then, the whole thing starts again.

I prefer nVidia cards. I'm not a gamer. I just like the way they display, but at the price you can afford to try either an nVidia or ATI card.

Note that GeForce2 cards are so low in value that you may have a friend who would give you one he has in his box of random parts. If it's not local, it probably costs more to ship one to you than the card is worth on the street.

Hope that helps. 🙂

I just noticed the specs for your machine with the K6III. That setup is capable of running DOS and Windows 3.11, but that's about it.

If that's for real, don't bother spending money on it. You'll be better off getting an inexepensive new setup, or check the For Sale/Trade forum for a relatively new setup. From where you are, now, a system with an 32 bit Athlon XP and RAM that's at least DDR will cost you less and will at least move around the web at a decent speed.

im pretty sure the logic board has an agp slot the brown one. the others are white.

I was really hoping to get a cheap video card on ebay cause i just have 8 megs of vram and wanna play like diablo.

I dont know what you mean jax.

My uncle says its an agp 4-x slot so will that work cause the frys ad says agp 128mb is that different?

I'm just saying that your computer is ANCIENT in computer terms.

I have to agree with Russian Sensation: a bottom-of-the-barrel entry-level machine would still blow yours away by such a stupendous margin that it'd be worth considering.

my uncle gave me this comp so I cant get another one. its old but I play most games I just want to player new stuff like diablo.

This cracked me open.

Pretty much any videocard can play diablo 1. Your 8 mb card will be enough for even the "latest" Diablo 2. I remember playing Diablo 1 countless times on a Trident videocard with only 1 mb of Vram and the 133 mhz Cyrix cpu. It worked flawlessly.

well my uncle is old so guess he doesnt know the newest stuff but im glad I have a comp now.

thansk for the help dudes glad you got to laugh.

Well do what you can with what you have now... but if I were you I would start saving for a totally new (cheap) computer that will be able to play Diablo 3 (hopefully arriving in 2009).

Yeah...

Wow.

About the time such threads would be commonplace is when I started getting into building computers, my first PC was a K6-2 350 with 64mb, integrated Rage PRO 4mb, and a 56k winmodem. Looking at my system specs, it's amazing how far things have come in the 10 years since!

OP, seriously, don't even bother upgrading that hunk of junk. Its only real use these days is as a linux router.

Dell Outlet store

Right now, there is an Inspiron 530s with a Pentium Dual Core 1.6Ghz, with 1GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive. SFF style case though.

For 15 bucks more, you can get a mid tower case with 2GB of RAM, but with a 2.Ghz Celeron. Each have DVDRW drives.

Either of these machines will blow your K6-3 out of the water and best it by such a large margin its not even funny.

Mow some lawns, pick up some extra shifts at MCDs. Its not worth the effort to upgrade that K6-3 box.

If the OP has the know-how I would suggest building a PC from scratch. But that depends on user capability. My first PC was a 100MHz Intel 486 DX4 with 16MB RAM; I played Quake 2 on it with a 1MB VGA card lol so I know how it is if you can't afford a new PC. But even in today's times of high prices everywhere a decent upgrade from a K6 III wouldn't cost a lot. Some part-time job could get you there in no time.

My first pc had a 386 dx running at 40mhz but my second pc had a 486 dx4 running at a fantastic 100mhz 😉

It wasn't until my amd k6 2 days that my gaming really took off 🙂

Everybody suggest the OP to get a new computer. He said that he got this one from his uncle and probably ( most likely ) doesn't have the money to build a better one. He just wants to play Diablo and that is all, why are you all recommending him to build another computer?

Have you used a K6 with 128 megs of ram? Let me make you a cup of instant coffee while it loads MSN Messenger. I have no idea what kind of "gaming" OP is talking about. In 2001 my first build ever was XP1600+ with 256mb of system memory that wasn't even sufficient for anything back then. I had to quickly upgrade to 512mb to make XP at least smooth for 2D browsing.

All I am saying is that in this extreme scenario it actually makes sense to save every $1 for a cheap system. There is no reason to dump anything towards this rig. Even your "free" AMD 780G or NV 8200 onboard graphics will wipe the floor with a K6 system regardless of whatever graphics card you pair it with....

I played Diablo on a K6-233 with 8 Megs of RAM, so I know that it will run it. The video card was a Tseng Labs ET6000 with 2MB of VRAM. Just boot it up to Win95 or Win98, and run it. As long as there aren't any hardware problems it should run fine.

Because he wants to play games, and a 7-8 year old machine is just hopeless. Others just assumed it was a poor parody thread; my money is on the OP also being 7-8 years old. :frown:
