So much for my theory crafting :(

I guess I should have taken into account my laptops res, can you try the HD3000 at 1366?

I'm the OP and would love to try it on my HD3000. The servers are down. :( I am waiting to get an answer to the SE vs Ti question I asked.

You can always start your own thread about the HD3000. :)

Don't understand how the SE is almost $100 less and 30% faster than a 560 Ti. Links?

He said 550 Ti. But forget about the 560 SE. Why would you get a 196 bit 288 core GF114 at 776MHz when the GTX 460 192 bit has a 336 core GF114 at over 800MHz for less money (after rebate)?
It's the same chip, the same memory configuration, but the GTX 460 has more cores enabled, at a faster speed, and with 4000MHz memory instead of 3800MHz.

Its not letting me choose that resolution for some reason, yesterday I was running on an external display that let me. The internal one is not though. However, I can tell you that at 1280x1024 with everything turned down, it actually runs quite smooth! Tiny bit of jerkiness here and there, but over all very playable. And its smart enough to not stretch it out, instead it cuts the sides off.

Headed out to pick up video card. :) So much for a "budget" build.

Log In button in D3 was grayed out at 4AM and the same now. Registered @ battlenet. Dunno what I am doing wrong. I know the open Beta is hammering the servers but still...

ARGH! It took out my PSU. Removed the card & PSU dead as a door nail. Now have to deal with that.

Back to MC.

That seems odd...

Even if it had a short the PSU should be able to survive that.

Diablo3 Open Beta started today so if anyone wanted I guess a very general idea(Because its a beta) of how their system might perform, you can go try it. :p

I just finished it using a 9800GT and an E4500, both at stock. I was using 1440x900. It ran fairly well, just a few momentary glitches.

I thought the demo was fun. Interface was decent and combat OK. I was amazed at how ugly the graphics were though. Maybe that is just their art style, or the graphics are not optimized yet, but it looked like something out of 2005. I would say even and old game like Titan Quest looked better, and there was no comparison to Skyrim. I also had trouble logging on. The lack of off line single player mode is definitely a big black mark against the game to me, and makes me seriously question if I want to buy the game.

How can you possible compare a first person game to an overhead isometric view game? Nothing about them is similar.

And per typical Blizzard, they build their games to run on the majority of systems. The fact that it runs on your 9800 is proof of that. They could make it look great, but then their market would be limited to people with gaming rigs. Where as the majority of their customers are most likely using laptops and the like.

As for not getting on, they have been stress testing various levels of users so they were purposely limiting how many people could be on. The little news blurb on the right mentions this.

The Antec 500w lived for 6.5 years. When they get old they are no longer pumping out peak power. The Intel HD3000 was fine. As soon as I hooked up the card, no POST. I put my ear down by the PSU and using the power rocker panel switch I could hear a barely audible sound like when you parse your lips. A soft puff sound.

Went BACK to MC and picked up a PC Power & Cooling 600w, Silencer. $90, $70 AR. All the power is on a single rail which is excellent. Love the smell of a new PSU. ;) So glad I went with EVGA too. They are based in SoCal and know their stuff. 24x7 support. Even walked me through some driver settings.

Now I'm too tired to play. :(

This is no longer a budget build IMO. Need to change my sig.

EDIT: Sig changed.

Servers down for an hour. Is this why the login button is still grayed out? I am assuming for the login name it's name#19xx and not just name.

I understand that they want the game to run on a variety of systems. All I am saying is that on my system it looked worse than any new game I have played in the past several years. And I don't see what the first person vs isometric point of view has to do with my post. I was talking about the appearance of the ground, trees, buildings, etc. Which is not affected by the point of view,

BTW, Skyrim runs on Med/high on my system with no problems since the patch, and looks immeasurably better.

after playing the beta and seeing the sub-par 6 year old graphics (completely disappointed), i'm willing to bet that even integrated graphics will run this game fine! I've seen smartphone games with better graphics than this! Blizzard has really taken a nose dive here, its like the background is just 2D, this is not a 3D game. and there's a constant greenish tint and the colors look completely washed out!:(

An HD3000 runs it at 1280x1024 very smooth, I tested that yesterday. Which shows the engine is old.

As for the color tints, I don't see that at all. I have played it on three different display setups (although all were IPS). If your colors look washed out, did you adjust the gama in the graphics settings?

I am so relieved. The guy I usually deal with at the MC Build Your Own counter was already gone for the day. This other guy tried to freak me out by saying I could have shorted everything out. NOT! It was the way he said it and added "we all make mistakes". It was condescending and I think he was trying to get me to trip on it b/c I'm a chick.

Heh, I even took the whole PSU with me so I could compare the 8 pin cable length side-by-side. I have the PSU bottom mounted and it had to stretch all the up to the top corner of the mobo and over the fat card. I had room to spare. One other thing. All the SATA power cables are flat for the new cases . The 24 pin, 8 pin and PCI-e are still round. They even had two spots designated for the PCI-e to plug in on the back. One PCI-e cable was on board so I only had to plug 1 more in. Very, very quiet.

Figured out that email address is the user name and played D3 for a couple of hours. Not impressed with the graphics, but it was fun. I have Skyrim sitting here and that should rock this new card a bit. Will load it and start the monitoring of temps later.

This is a poor excuse especially given the longevity of blizzard games. Hate to blow your mind but D2 is 12 years old(!!) and people are still playing it. If D3 already has outdated graphics, in 12 years it'll look like a 20 year old game! Also blizzard doesn't need to cater to the masses. People will literally go out and upgrade their systems just to play their games. I know I would.

That being said, I'm still rockin my GTS 250. Been waiting for a game that will force me to upgrade but doesn't look like D3 will be it.

It depends on how you look at it, but as a matter of fact, Blizzard has always been about the lowest common denominator. They were one of the last to switch to 3D graphics and when they did, well look at Warcraft 3. Hell there was talks that they might do vector graphics on SCII. That said its also an art issue. On Warcraft/WoW they go with simple textures and a cartoony look, you can try to push the graphics card, and you can in raids, but its still simple textures and a cartoony look. You can't make it look real. Same thing but in the other direction with Diablo. Very little lighting, very little foliage, colors are very dark, no amount of engine power is going to make it look like BF3 or Crysis. So both of them run into an issue. If the art and style isn't going to look better with better power, then why limit peoples ability to buy into the game by driving up system requirements.

I am married but do you have a BF?:wub::wub::thumbsup:

anyway d3 beta is making my card hotter than ANY OTHER software/game so far. hd6850.
-hmm now 20 mins till the beta server shutdown. so far the game isn't revolutionary to me but we'll see .

LOL, I just thought the same thing, I wonder if having the 512 MB vs. 1GB version will end up making a difference at 1080p, or if the 4870 is just going to be too weak to use more than half a gig of VRAM.

Dunno, but mine is 512 also.

After playing, it runs pretty well. Only thing is there is very slight stuttering when there are tons of enemies on the screen. Not too big of a deal, since it's with everything on high, and it's still playable anyway.
