BSOD, iaStorV.sys

My first BSOD. The computer in my sig.

When it happened. I downloaded avira AV, installed it, and as soon as the disk scanning process started I got the BSOD and there was an immediate shutdown.
Starting the computer again, it returns the BSOD as soon as the OS is loaded.

Some searching shows that iaStorV.sys has something to do with RAID drivers. About a week ago I transferred my OS from a RAID 0 to an SSD disk. It was working fine for those few days though. Details here.

http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2373969

Is there anything I can do to fix my system without having to reinstall Windows?
I can boot into safe mode, but avira does not work, in case it's a virus problem.

A full filesystem check would be a good idea IMO.

elevated command prompt: chkdsk C: /f /v /r

Did you remove the RAID drivers and install Intel RST?

It might well be the same driver files but configured with different registry options.

SMART readings OK? I usually use CrystalDiskInfo to check this, but if you need to download it, go for a zip because the install exe likes to non-optionally install crapware.

I assume you did the disk check with the command switches I mentioned, so the end result was a 5-part disk check.

I am not sure how to remove the RAID drivers. I did install the Intel Matrix storage driver (a chipset before the Intel RST), and I still have the same BSOD. If this is a driver issue, (a) why it was not fixed, and (b) why did it worked fine for 5 days?

Checkdisk was done with the switches.

I will check on Crystal diskinfo next.

Edit. CrystalDiskInfo says the disk is okay.

I've had issues with the Matrix Storage manager previously and ended up falling back on the standard MSAHCI driver, but I won't go so far as to say 'IMS is crap'. It was just the one experience, and I think I've used it without problems on other machines.

When did you install IMS?

Drivers aren't flawlessly written, what else is there to say? I once saw an NCQ issue that for the life of me I couldn't reproduce, but the customer experienced it in a semi-regular basis.

I'm not saying it's necessarily hardware or software at this point btw.

I'm not that experienced with Intel storage hardware/drivers from the IMS era, perhaps other people are aware of some quirks of it?

When did you install IMS?

Just now, in between the posts. Device manager shows the correct driver, so I am leaning towards a virus problem now. Btw, I was using this driver for six months before switching to RAID without problems.

My files are backed up in case of reinstalling, and I have an image backup that is almost two months old. If this is a driver issue the image backup is useless as I was using RAID at the time.

Will be back later.

I might boot into Safe Mode (good you can still do that), with Networking and run an online virus scanner. U might start with this:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

See if you can get it to work.

I would also uninstall Avira immediately if you haven't already.

Not sure, but I think Combofix is still only compatible with 32-bit systems.

Did you get and run Whocrashed? If not, pls get the free version and try to run it.

Thank you very much sir.

I can't thank you enough to be honest.

It looks so simple now. As I have already runned a virus scanner with FSecure's rescue disk, this was the first and only step I made and got back my system. Everything looks normal so far.

I do admit to this beeing very strange though. What might have caused it? An AV program shouldn't crush a system. Never mind.

And thank you once again Virgorising.

Thank you very much sir.

Hey! I am female, but don matter, given you seem back to health again!!

Kindly clarify, I am not sure what U did, exactly. U mean you uninstalled Avira and then ran virus scan with FSecure's rescue disk?

And, it's true, software conflicts can mess things up bigtime!

And, no thanks necessary.

I have uninstalled Avira and everything was back to normal. Obviously something in the program was blocking something.
I would say that you stated the obvious but I couldn't see it, right in front of me.

I runned FSecure before that, before even reading your post and my disks came out healthy.

And my apologies for calling you sir.

O! Got it!!! Yes, often, we get lost in non existent complelxity and miss the obvious! Happens to everyone!

Excellent!

Stop! No biggie!!!!!

I am very happy the stress is over and U R back to normal!

Well, as I am discovering now, not everything is back to normal.

I use Windows Live Mail and it refuses to open saying "that it has corrupted data which causes the program to close". It also gives (0x8E5E0247), but it does not say whether it is an error code. A search returns different various results about this code.

Should I unistall and reinstall WLM?

Edit. According to this thread,
http://www.itropics.net/computers/s...forcing-windows-live-mail-to-close-0x8e5e0247
the IMS driver might be doing this.

OK, it's a JOURNEY. Not to worry.

I would first get and run the free version of MBAM. Pls run the LONG scan.

Tell me, I know about yr rescue disk, but not clear re what antivirus you run. And, do you also run malware scans as per MBAM?

I did run MBAM before my BSOD. Since I am using MSE I was looking for something better (there is a thread AVTEST, in software for windows), so I decided to install Avira which caused me the problems.

Here you can find a link about creating a rescue CD.

Once you boot into it, it downloads some more and then runs a scan. Quite handy if you cannot boot your OS.

Thanks for the info. I've always run third party AVs and haven't run Avira for a very long time.

But we may still have stuff to put right re yr previous RAID setup.

I have an SSD, a 1TB (data) and also have a 160GB spinner leftover from the RAID. My nephew needed a disk.....and myself the troubles.

Apart from mail not working , the buildin downloader from IE11 does not work either. I am thinking of reinstalling.

OK, you gave the 160GB mechanical drive to yr nephew and now have the SDD and the 1T mechanical drive installed? And you have only the OS on the SDD? I am unclear. U got a 250GB SDD just for faster boot?

Which drive are you having all these issues in? The 1T mechanical?

The OS is on the SSD. The other disks just hold data. I had two 160GB disks on RAID and I gave one to my nephew. I was planning on getting an SSD by the end of the year, and the prices dropped a little recently. Actually I run evrything of the SSD. The 1 TB (spinner) holds some data, some image backups, music and movies (which are not needed).

I unistalled and reinstalled mail and it is not working. Same error.
I think I will reformat on the weekend. This way I will rule out any errors from the SSD since it's a new item.

Above is important. I've never done RAID (I like independent drives), any version, but, given dismantling only in the bios is not enough----and I hope someone here familiar with RAID can weigh in---you may have to nuke/zero out yr mechanical drive and do a clean install. I sure hope not.

Thanks for the clarifications.

Again, I hope someone very RAID savvy can address what needs to be reformatted, if not zeroed out/nuked to completely get rid of yr RAID residue.
