BSD as a server OS?

Right now I am downloading the 2 FreeBSD 4.4 ISOs, and I need some suggetions and help on my attempt to install FreeBSD and use it as a server OS and dual boot it with my NT server. Right now I have an NT server that I use as a print serevr, data and MP3 server. I can access it with both my Windows boxes, a Linux box and BeOS box. I have had troubles getting the Linux box to mount a share at startup which was another forum topic I started so maybe this one will be fixed when I do this, I'm sure I am going to run into other problems though.

How should I go about doing this? Right now NT is running OK so I thought I would make another partition on the HDD with Partition magic to install BSD in then from there hopefully there will be some option to dual boot with the BSD install right? Once I get this installed, how hard is it going to be to get my other machines to see the BSD server shares, any opinions and suggestions on this would be appreciated, I know n0cmonkey will like the fact that someone is going to give BSD a shot, hehe.

Yea, you will be ok with the dual boot. It will ask you if you want to dual boot or not.

You will need to setup Samba, which is not hard to configure

Well, right now I can't do anything until I figure out how to get a partition for BSD, I dont have any free space and even though I have Partition Magic 7 and Partition Commander neither support NT Server so I don't know what I am going to do, and all the partitioning utilities on Linux disks I have won't let me resize a good partition that has data in it without messing it up.

If it really is Windows NT server (and not 2k) then I think the only way to do it is with ServerMagic.

But if you have to buy a copy of it, it would be cheaper to add a second IDE disk, methinks!

The Partition Magic DOS executables work fine with any version of the OS, hell I wouldn't trust resizing partitions inside of Windows anyway.

I think FreeBSD needs a primary partition so check on that before you get started. And Buddha Bart has the right idea.

"cd /usr/ports/net/samba&&sudo make&&sudo install" Something like that anyhow.
